Jordan Spieth seems torn on the PGA Tour's new no-cut format for its Signature Events. The American golfer entered the Cadillac Championship with a 72-man field and four guaranteed rounds, with no Friday cut. This places the focus on position across 72 holes rather than survival through 36.
Spieth, during media interaction on Friday at Trump National Doral on Friday, May 1, 2026, was asked if the no-cut format works better from a player's perspective.
“If you’re asking me personally, obviously. If you’re asking me what’s best for the PGA Tour, that’s probably a different answer,” said Spieth.
The new format ensures the Tour's biggest stars remain in the field through Sunday, keeping the focus on the leaderboard rather than the cut line, with scoring spread across the full week.
“But as a player in that, why wouldn't that be better? You know. But I don't know if that's what's going to be best or what's going to happen in the future,” said the 13-time PGA Tour winner.
“And that's not necessarily for the players to decide, it will be collaborating with the networks and the fans and the players, so it will be kind of a group effort. I think they're trying to figure that out,” added the 32-year-old.
The 2015 Masters victor clearly values the guaranteed weekend play but wonders if removing the Friday cut is actually best for viewers and fans of the sport.
Spieth will head into the weekend tied for second at the Cadillac Championship after opening with a 7-under 65 and following it with a 1-over 71 at Trump National Doral.
“But I mean, as a player, you know, obviously you're playing faster, there's less people in the field, so it's technically, you know, obviously the field's elite, but if you just added more people that's more players. So, yes and no, depending upon how you're asking it,” added Spieth.
Concerning the Cadillac Championship, the second round cost him ground, but not position, leaving him at 8-under and five shots behind Cameron Young through 36 holes.
Jordan Spieth on managing results while waiting on form to convert
While the format shaped the conversation, Jordan Spieth’s position on the leaderboard also brought his form into focus.
“I feel like my game's been getting better, so I just want it to show up in the results. So it's frustrating,” said Spieth during the Trump National Doral interaction.
Speith has made nine cuts in 10 starts in 2026, added five top-25 finishes, and stayed in the mix at multiple Signature Events, even without a win.
“If I was playing bad and bad things were happening, it's like, you know, I can be realistic with myself that, but I want to get away with a couple shots here or there, and then I want to see some scores posted. But it's days like today where it really matters, not days like yesterday,” added Spieth.
That pattern has followed him through much of 2026. At The Players, both first and second rounds saw him closing with double bogeys, which cost him four shots and dropped him out of early contention.
At Augusta, Spieth said he hit it as well as he ever has there, but a quiet putter left him in a tie for 12th place.
Fans will be hoping to see a better showing from the 2017 Open Championship winner over the course of the 2026 Cadillac Championship.
