The tournament announced it, and Jordan Spieth confirmed it. But later, Spieth's name was no longer on the player list. Neither the tournament nor Spieth explained why.
The 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, listed Spieth as a "late withdrawal" on Friday, July 18, according to the Pioneer Press. The tournament had announced his commitment via social media just 10 days earlier. Those posts have since been removed from the tournament's account. No reason was given for the withdrawal.
The timing is notable. Spieth missed the cut at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale on Friday, July 17, one day before the withdrawal was confirmed. He shot 10-over par across two rounds, finishing in a tie for sixth-to-last place at the same course where he won the 2017 Open Championship.
According to the Pioneer Press, the reason for the reversal is unknown. Injury is one possibility. A change of plans is another. Spieth has not made a public statement about the withdrawal.

The decision carries a cost. Spieth could still use the FedEx Cup points available at the 3M Open as he works to improve his standing before the playoffs. He is a three-time major champion who hasn't finished in the top 55 in any of his last five starts.
Spieth has never played the 3M Open. His commitment had been treated as a significant addition for the Minnesota stop. His withdrawal removes one of the PGA Tour's most recognizable names from a field that had publicly celebrated his arrival just days earlier.
Jordan Spieth and his form have been sliding, and Birkdale made it worse.
According to the Pioneer Press, he has now gone five straight tournaments without finishing inside the top 55. His missed cut at Royal Birkdale is the latest result in that run.
The timing is important because of the FedEx Cup race. At the Travelers Championship in late June, Spieth said he was planning to play "potentially Minnesota," according to the Washington Times.
At that time, he was around 52nd in the FedEx Cup standings, just outside the important top-50 cutoff.
Finishing in the top 50 is very important. Players who end the season in the top 50 qualify for all eight signature events in 2027. Spieth finished 54th last season and missed that chance. This year, he has been trying to make sure it does not happen again.
Birkdale in 2017 was his third major title. The same course in 2026 produced a 10-over-par and an early exit. Skipping the 3M Open now removes one of his remaining chances to accumulate points before the playoffs begin.
