PGA Tour golfer Justin Thomas turned to world No. 3 Cameron Young’s putter setup in an attempt to fix his recent struggles on the greens.

After his second round at the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club on Friday, Thomas explained the change that helped him reach seven-under par through two rounds.

"I literally texted Cameron's guys and said, 'Just give me Cam's putter,'" Thomas said. "I've been watching him make putts for a pretty good amount of time now, and I've always thought it looks really good."

Young has already won twice this year and is ranked No. 3 in the world, while Thomas ranks No. 152 on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting since returning from back surgery.

Thomas received the putter on Monday. He then played alongside Young during the first two rounds and joked about the awkward timing.

"We had the exact same shoes on yesterday," Thomas said. "It's like, 'I promise I'm not trying to copy everything you do. But I'm maybe trying to copy everything you do.'"

The new putter matches Cameron Young's setup. According to GOLF magazine, Thomas made the switch after struggling badly with his putting at Doral last week.

Justin Thomas spent the early part of the week working on speed control and alignment, and through two rounds, he ranks inside the top 10 in strokes gained putting, with two long birdie putts on Friday from beyond 12 feet.

Thomas carried his seven-under momentum into the weekend with the new flatstick in hand.

Justin Thomas has won the PGA Championship twice, including at Quail Hollow in 2017. He sits two shots behind leader Sungjae Im heading into the weekend at a course he knows very well.

This is only Thomas’ sixth event since returning from back surgery, with a tie for eighth at THE PLAYERS Championship standing as his best result so far.

"It's a long season, it's a lot of big tournaments ahead of me," Thomas said. "So just keep trying to improve and get back in contention more often."

His putting numbers through two rounds suggest that patience may finally be paying off. Whether it continues through the weekend and into next week's PGA Championship remains the biggest question.
