Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth go way back. Being best buddies, neither of them has hidden their appreciation for the other. And after the second round of the 2026 PGA Championship at the Aronimink, Thomas again did the same.
At the end of the second round, things look really tight at the PGA Championship. Thomas is just two shots away from the leader. Spieth, however, finds himself tied for 30th, three strokes behind his buddy.
Despite being well ahead of his friend, Thomas appreciated one of Spieth's incredible shots in the tournament. On May 15, he replied to an X post about Spieth's strike, saying, “Can’t put into words how incredible this is and how MAYBE 5 people in this tournament could even hit that shot let alone try it during a major, and pull it off haha."
The shot for which Thomas lauded Spieth was on the 11th hole, which had its pin placed on the front right edge of the green. Strong winds blew through the Aronimink, making it extremely difficult for the players to hit their shots close to the pin.
While most players hit 20 to 30 feet past the pin, Spieth pulled off a low punch shot into the bank with a great amount of spin. This strike from the 32-year-old made all the difference.
The shot landed on the green and ended up finishing 10 feet inside the pin, leaving the crowd and his friend Thomas in awe.
With the world No. 2 Rory McIlroy claiming the Aronimink does not have a “great setup” and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler stating that it has “the hardest set of pin locations”, Spieth’s shot deserves even more credit.
Shots like these indicate that he has the caliber to scale up to a far better position in the leaderboard. However, it will be interesting to watch if he can do better in the Championship than he has done this year.
Jordan Spieth’s Run Of Form in 2026
Jordan Spieth is yet to win his first title of the current season and hasn’t even finished in the Top-10 this year.
The 32-year-old’s best finish has been a tie for 11th position, which came at two different events. One was at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the other at the Valspar Championship.
Following the T11, Spieth's second-best finish has been a tie for 12th, which he also secured at two different tournaments. Those performances came at The Genesis Invitational and at The Masters.
At the Aronimink, the three-time major winner will hope to add to his trophy collection. But for that to happen, he will have to bridge a considerable gap on the leaderboard.
What are your thoughts on Spieth’s low punch shot, and do you think he will record his best performance this year at the PGA Championship?
