Kai Trump posted a Costa Rica vacation vlog, and ninety-five percent of polled Americans say the country is in an affordability crisis. The timing didn't go unnoticed.

Trump, a 19-year-old golfer, had uploaded the travel vlog to her YouTube channel on July 25, 2026, which has over 1.5 million subscribers.

The video documented a senior trip with high school friends to Costa Rica before she begins studying at the University of Miami this fall.

"I'm so grateful to spend this time together before we all head off to college," she wrote in the video description.

The vlog showed the group hiking a mountain, boogie-boarding at the beach, lounging by the beach club pool, having dinner, and playing card games. Trump also shared footage of early morning golf sessions before the trip, telling viewers she had spent seven hours working on her game the day before, five hours on the course and two hours putting.

The video was filmed before her appearance at the 2026 ESPY Awards in New York City. She also promoted the vlog on TikTok, lip-syncing to Eddie Money's "Take Me Home".

A 95 percent majority of polled Americans believe the U.S. is in the middle of an affordability crisis.

The comments section reflected that gap directly.

The Costa Rica vlog was not her first to generate this kind of response.

Viewers flood the comments section with direct criticism

The YouTube comments section filled quickly. One viewer wrote: "Please tell your grandpa to stop screwing up the global economy."

Several viewers also pointed out how expensive the trip appeared. In the comments, one person wrote, “Ahhhhh, the life of the rich and famous! Thanks for sharing with us peasants!” while another added, “Oh for the life of the rich and wealthy.”

Another commenter wrote, “Your ‘rich grandpa’ is a pawn. Today you’re rich, tomorrow you’re poor,” while others asked whether the president’s granddaughter travelled with her own Secret Service detail during her senior trip.

The Costa Rica vlog came after another controversy in March 2026, when Trump shared a video from an Erewhon grocery store and received similar criticism. In that video, she spent $233 on one grocery trip and joked that she might “go bankrupt.” Many viewers said the joke was insensitive because many people were struggling with high prices and inflation.

Trump has previously said the criticism doesn't affect her. "It doesn't really affect me because, I don't know, I know who I am," she said on her aunt Lara Trump's show, per Fox News. "It doesn't really matter, to be honest."
