On 12th December, Lexi Thompson made her third start at the Grant Thornton Invitational with Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open winner, who made his event debut this year. The tied with Charliey Hull and Michael Brennan, but all the while setting a Record!

The duo created history by matching the tournament’s single-round scoring record with a 17-under 55 on Friday at Tiburon Golf Club. They opened with three straight birdies, briefly steadied with a par, and then separated themselves with two eagles, one on the par-5 sixth and another on the par-4 10th, where the team holed out from the fairway.

And finally, with precise putting, they took the lead after 18 holes. By the time they reached the closing holes, they already made history.

“We really just fed off each other,” Thompson said after the round. While Clark, when asked what worked, said, “Everything.”

Thompson’s putting, Clark’s length off the tee, and high ball flight allowed the team to stay on the offensive without forcing shots.

“She’s a great putter. Our games complement each other perfectly.” Clark said. Meanwhile, Lexi Thompson noted, “Every shot [By Clark] seems so solid.”

Since the round was played in a scramble format, it also helped the duo. Post the round, Clark said. “I know alternate shot will be different, but it’s been really fun.”

However, Thompson and Clark had to face strong competition.

Lexi Thompson and Wyndham Clark tied with Charley Hull and Michael Brennan

Charley Hull and Michael Brennan set the early standard on Friday, opening the Grant Thornton Invitational with a 17-under-par 55 in the scramble format at Tiburon Golf Club. The score matched the tournament’s 18-hole record.

Hull admitted she arrived with uncertainty after recent swing changes. “I came on Tuesday, and I could not even keep the ball on the planet,” she said. “So I was actually pretty nervous today.”

Despite that, the pair produced a run of birdies and eagles across the middle of the round to move into a share of the lead after the opening day.
