Adam Scott's 2013 Masters win came down to one thing: trust. On the final green at Augusta, a call from his legendary caddie secured the win.

When Scott took a putt on the last green at Augusta National, Steve Williams, a caddie most famous for his lengthy, successful collaborations with Tiger Woods, guided him.

Scott and Williams were deep into their routine. They read the putt together, as they always did. Scott gave his view first, thinking the ball would break about a cup. Williams did not hesitate.

“This is breaking more than that. It’s two cups,” he told Scott. Adam Scott once recalled the moment while talking to Fore Play Golf. “It's just a little bit more than that. It's like twice as much as you see," added the caddie.

Scott even questioned the call initially. "And I think I said something like, are you absolutely sure? Have you ever seen this putt before?" he asked.

“It’s two,” Williams assured. That confidence came from experience. As Scott said, “That's why he's had a lot of success because he'll put it all on the line.”

He played the putt twice the break he initially saw. That putt forced the playoff. Minutes later, Scott became a Masters Champion.

Adam Scott and Steve Williams built their partnership on clarity

When Williams joined Scott’s bag in 2011, he arrived with one of the most impressive résumés in golf. Steve built his career beside Tiger Woods. Scott did not bring him in to be agreeable, but give him a reality check during tough calls. 

That balance came into sharp focus during the 2013 Masters. Over the years, Scott often credited Williams for sharpening his decision-making under pressure, not by offering more information, but by providing certainty. That mattered in majors, where hesitation is costly.

Their partnership ended a year after the Masters by mutual decision. Scott acknowledged that Williams helped him reach his biggest goal. "Steve has been an integral part of my team in a period where I have fulfilled some of my lifetime golfing goals. His dedication and professionalism have been without question, and his friendship is highly valued," Adam once said.

The Scott-Williams connection was not about personality or comfort. It was about execution. In the biggest moments, both knew their roles. And that clarity is what carried Adam Scott to a green jacket.
