Two reports dropped within hours of each other on LIV Golf's future. They pointed in opposite directions.

On July 30, GOLF.com posted on X, citing the New York Post: "BREAKING: LIV Golf is close to landing $250 million-plus in investments."

Less than 24 hours later, on July 31, Flushing It posted a detailed account from multiple anonymous insiders, one that described imminent bankruptcy filings, cancelled events and players left in the dark.

The Flushing It report on X stated that multiple LIV Golf insiders expect the company to file for bankruptcy in the coming weeks to restructure contracts and what it described as an "extensive debt burden."

Players with outstanding contract payments have already been approached with equity offers for a restructured entity called LIV Golf 2.0. Flushing It noted that reaction among players has been mixed. Some have signed Indication of Interest documents. Others have not returned them despite the documents being non-binding.

Jon Rahm sits at the center of it all. Flushing It reported that Rahm is estimated to still be owed nine figures on his deal signed ahead of the 2024 season, which still has multiple years remaining. That would make him the league's biggest creditor in a bankruptcy scenario. At LIV Golf UK, Rahm declined to guarantee he would play on LIV in 2027 when asked directly.

The Team Championship in Michigan, scheduled in approximately four weeks, adds another layer of uncertainty. The multiple vendors and contractors were told the event had been cancelled, with travel and accommodation also scrapped and the venue build-out not yet started. Yet in an email sent to players and staff, CEO Scott O'Neil referenced "planning for the Team Championship," leaving players with no clarity on whether or where it will take place.

The money situation makes things clearer. LIV Golf has been looking at ways to reorganize since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) said in April that it would stop funding the league after 2026.

LIV has also signed very expensive deals with top players. Jon Rahm reportedly received $300 million. Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson reportedly received $125 million each. Phil Mickelson reportedly received $200 million.

LIV Golf would not offer an official comment for Flushing It's post, with all sourcing remaining anonymous.

The $250M investment report and what it actually means

The New York Post's report of a $250 million investment deal provides the only counterweight to the bankruptcy narrative.

But Flushing It noted that any such deal would still need to be approved by the Saudi PIF, which retains ownership of the company.

Securing investment and keeping players are two separate challenges.

Veteran corporate restructuring executives Gene Davis and Jon Zinman are leading LIV's new independent directors committee, with AlixPartners serving as financial adviser and Ducera Partners as investment banker.

The golf industry was already surprised by the appointment of Davis and Zinman because both are known for working on bankruptcy cases.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil is trying to raise $250 million to keep the league running. He now believes the league could start making a profit within two years, which is a big change from his earlier estimate of about ten years.

LIV Golf has four events left in its 2026 season: the UK event, New York, Indianapolis, and the Team Championship in Michigan.
