LIV Golf Players Await Updates as Reports Emerge of Executive Meeting in New York

Just hours before the pre-tournament news conference of LIV Golf Mexico on Tuesday, it was announced that it had been cancelled due to “technical issues.”
However, reports suggested that an executive meeting in New York was the real reason behind the cancellation.
Telegraph Sport reported that LIV Golf executives were not on site at Mexico City’s Club de Golf Chapultepec. The reason behind that was “an emergency summit” in Manhattan.
Rumors circulated on social media on Tuesday night that LIV was on the brink of being shut down. Players were also asked for their opinion on this meeting. Spain’s Sergio Garcia had his say.
"We haven't heard anything," Garcia said. "From what Yasir [Al-Rumayyan] told us at the start of the year, he's behind us with a long-term project.”
"There are always rumors, but I can't say more than what we already know," Garcia added at Wednesday’s rescheduled pre-tournament press conference.
The Tuesday press conference cancellation marked the first time in LIV Golf’s four-year history that its media centre was shut.
The update was shared with journalists as they waited to get on shuttle buses to the press HQ. However, the reason behind the cancellation was attributed to a dysfunctional power board.
Telegraph Sport also contacted some LIV players on Wednesday morning.
“I’ll be honest. None of the players have heard anything. It’s hopefully a merger. Everyone gathers at Augusta, don’t they?” said one of the golfers.
Golfers had reportedly started their preparations for the sixth tournament of the league while waiting to be informed about the main agenda of the meeting.
Possible Agenda Of The Meeting
The move comes as PIF has unveiled a new five-year strategic plan. A statement read: “The 2026–2030 Strategy represents a natural progression from a phase of growth and expansion to a new phase of achieving sustainable value, maximizing impact, increasing investment efficiency, and implementing the highest standards of governance, transparency, and institutional excellence.”
Talk of a potential merger between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour has persisted since the widely discussed “framework agreement” in 2023. However, nothing substantial has happened since.
A deal between LIV and the DP World Tour could be on the cards. However, after a poor showing at The Masters and with Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed leaving, debate is growing over whether this is the endgame for the rebel tour.
The future of the Saudi-backed league remains uncertain as fans and players await official word.
