LIV Golfer Once Secured a Masters Spot in Dramatic Fashion That's Still Turning Heads Before Augusta

The 50-year-old English golfer had already moved on, and then he won.
Ian Poulter had mentally written off his 2018 Masters chances by Monday of Houston Open week, only to beat Beau Hossler in a playoff days later and walk away with an Augusta invitation.
Most of that last-minute, heart-in-mouth qualification is still one of the most talked-about Augusta entries in recent memory. And with the Masters almost here, it's making the rounds all over again, reminding the history to all the fans heading to the Masters this April.

When Ian Poulter was asked after his final round in Texas whether a Masters spot was driving him down the back nine, Poulter shut that down immediately.
"No, it really didn't," Ian Poulter said. Also, he has an interesting reason for that. "I had all of Monday at home to reflect, think about it, and sleep in," Poulter said.
By Tuesday, he was back competing, and by Sunday, he was a winner. That victory came through patience, not desperation. Poulter said he spotted early that the leaderboard would compress.
"I knew the guys from behind were going to come forward, and they did," he said. "I had to be patient, so that was another key thing."
But pulling it off is one thing and understanding just how rare that kind of last-minute entry really is, that's another story entirely.
How Ian Poulter's Last-Minute Push Fits the Brutal Reality of Masters Qualifying
When everyone knows that getting into Augusta isn't straightforward at all.
But there are 26 qualifying criteria: PGA Tour wins within the prior year, a Players Championship title, Olympic gold, or a past Masters title, which carries a lifetime exemption. Every path demands something more significant here.
Ion Poulter found his with a playoff victory, having given up on the idea six days earlier. It remains one of the more striking Masters qualification stories in recent memory.
He left for LIV Golf in 2022. But this week, with the Texas Children's Houston Open drawing players still chasing Masters spots, his 2018 run feels relevant all over again.
Some doors open with months of planning. Poulter's opened on a Sunday afternoon in Houston, when nobody, including him, saw it coming.
