Charley Hull made it clear that confidence in golf is not only about swing mechanics. Appearing on Sky Sports Golf's YouTube channel on September 12, 2025, Hull argued that confidence in your clothing directly translates to confidence on the course.

Host Kelly Cates framed it from a commercial lens, as she puts it, “There’s also that kind of individual look that comes with it. There’s a style aspect to it because you’re selling a product as well.”

LPGA and PGA Tour players compete with sponsor logos, and apparel deals form a core part of endorsement income.

“If you’re confident in what you’re wearing… it makes you feel confident. If you look good in what you’re wearing, you feel confident. I only think it can help you feel better, play better,” Charley Hull said on The Pursuit.

And the LPGA star isn't the only one who feels this way. According to a 2012 Journal of Experimental Social Psychology study, the notion that what we wear has an effect on our self-perception and, thereby, performance is termed "enclothed cognition."

"I think it's what makes it more appealing for people coming to play golf as well," she added. While Hull didn't comment on Cates' "selling a product" statement, she has sponsorship and endorsement deals with Malbon, AnewGolfUSA, and SundogEyewear.

Golf Has Never Been Casual About Clothing

Golf dress codes exist to protect the sport’s standards. The majority of private clubs enforce a dress code consisting of collared shirts, tailored trousers or golf shorts, and golf shoes with soft spikes. Generally, denim, gym wear, cargo shorts, and T-shirts are not allowed.

Certain clubs demand that shirts be tucked in and that hats be worn facing forward. A public course is likely to be more lenient, giving more freedom; however, golf-specific clothing is still standard.

According to the College of Golf at Keiser University, dress codes uphold golf’s etiquette and identity. At the same time, modern apparel brands design stretch and moisture-wicking fabrics that meet these requirements while improving mobility.
