Luis Carrera Talks About LIV Golf Mexico Debut and Competing Alongside Major Champions

As Luis Carrera steps into Bryson DeChambeau's shoes at LIV Golf Mexico, the significance of the moment isn't lost.

“It was amazing. The atmosphere was unbelievable, having my family and friends out there meant a lot,” he said. “I was definitely nervous, especially on Sunday, but I think I handled it pretty well. It’s a good step forward, knowing I can compete on that kind of stage,” said Carrera.

Carrera was drafted on his home soil to substitute for the two-time U.S. Open Champion in the final round. This was the second time Carrera featured in a LIV Golf event. Last year, he filled in for the five-time major champion, Brooks Koepka, at LIV Golf Dallas, after he withdrew due to illness.

This time, Carrera teamed up with major champions Charl Schwartzel and Cameron Smith, which visibly brought in a lot of pressure for the youngster. Eventually, he finished 58th on the individual rankings.

“Just playing alongside those guys already brings a lot of pressure. That was enough on its own,” he added.

Carrera’s team, Crushers GC, struggled throughout the tournament as they finished in 12th place with a team score of +1. It was their lowest finish in this season.

The sub-in at LIV Golf Mexico provided considerable experience to the young Mexican, as he currently features at the Singapore Open for his first International Series start of the season.

Carrera Is Coming Off a Strong Start

After becoming the first player to win Qualifying School and then the first two events of the new 2025/26 season, Carrera secured his maiden professional title at the FBC Zim Open.

Just a week later, Carrera recorded a 10-stroke victory at Irene Country Club, winning the KitKat Cash & Carry Pro-Am with a record 30-under-par total.

“It feels amazing. It’s a wonderful feeling. I played some of the best golf I played in my life and I’m happy about that. The Irene Country Club is a great golf course. I really enjoyed playing here,” Carrera said.

Now, Carrera can continue his strong momentum on the International Series.
