Matt Fitzpatrick Says Second RBC Heritage Win "Means the World" to Him and His Family

Matt Fitzpatrick defeated world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage. The victory marks his second title at Harbour Town.

Fitzpatrick described the emotional significance of the win at Harbour Town.

"It means the world," Fitzpatrick told CBS's Amanda Balionis after his playoff victory at Harbour Town Golf Links on Sunday.

"This is a tournament I wanted to win growing up more than any of the majors before I understood more about the game. To go toe-to-toe with Scottie and get it over the line is special."

Fitzpatrick beat world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler on the first playoff hole, the 73rd of the week, striking a 4-iron from 204 yards to 13 feet and converting the birdie to clinch his second RBC Heritage title and rise to a career-high No. 3 in the world rankings.

With his wife Katherine beside him and their family growing, this one felt bigger than a normal victory.

"To win it twice means the world," Fitzpatrick said. "Don't have a choice now."

It wasn't smooth. Fitzpatrick held a three-shot lead for much of the final round, only to bogey the 72nd after a poor chip into the grain. Scheffler made back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to force the playoff, closing with a 67.

Fitzpatrick attributed the win to mental toughness.

"Just a lot of grit," he said. "A lot, a lot of grit."

His caddie Daniel Parratt helped keep him calm between the end of regulation play and the playoff, and their conversation brought a laugh and a reference to Rory McIlroy.

"He said, 'We're taking this back to the start of the week,'" Fitzpatrick said. "And I know Rory said that the other week. So I jokingly said, 'Oh, okay. Harry Diamond here.' We had a good laugh about that."

How Childhood Trips Made Dream Win for Matt Fitzpatrick

The result caps a remarkable run: a runner-up at THE PLAYERS Championship, a Valspar Championship win, and now a second RBC Heritage title, earning nearly $8 million across his last four tournaments.

But for Fitzpatrick, Harbour Town has always been more than a tournament. His family used to vacation on Hilton Head Island when he was a boy — the golf, the tennis, the beaches.

Winning the event was a goal he set while attending as a young spectator.

That dream came true twice, and Scheffler was gracious in defeat. "Anytime Fitzy needed something to happen, he made something happen," Scheffler said. "He definitely earned the win, and he just played great golf."
