Michael Brennan recently presented a clarification about his disqualification from 2026's first PGA Tour event, and the 23-year-old resorted to a straightforward approach for the cause.

On the evening of January 29, the PGA Tour disqualified Brennan from the Farmers Insurance Open for violating Model Local Rule G-11. He had used non-permitted green-reading materials during his opening round on the North Course. Officials didn't elaborate any more on Thursday evening, leaving fans to speculate about what exactly happened.

The clarification finally came from Brennan himself on February 1, in the form of an Instagram post. The 23-year-old explained that he had started working with a course data analyst to sharpen his strategy. Each evening before a round, the analyst sent green maps showing hole locations to help plan approach shots.

While studying those maps, Brennan drew arrows in his yardage book to organize his thoughts on various approaches. However, this turned out to be a terrible mistake that ultimately cost him his spot in the tournament before the start of the second round.

After enjoying significant success over the last two years, 2026 began on an untoward note for Brennan, as he missed out on a share of the tournament's $9.6 million purse.

The 23-year-old didn't mince words while clarifying the reason for his disqualification, and labeled the incident a "painful lesson." However, Brennan's final line showed that he wasn't going to stay down after this setback.

Attending a party might sound like a bad idea for Brennan, considering his unfortunate disqualification from the year's first PGA Tour event.

But that is exactly what he said at the end of his Instagram post containing the clarification. He said, "While this has been a painful lesson to learn, I am looking forward to the party in the desert next week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, let's go!"

So, it seems like the 23-year-old has already set his eyes on his next target. And it also seems to be a wise one since the tournament has exactly the same purse as the Farmers Insurance Open: $9.6 million.
