Rory McIlroy will finally step into Augusta National without the pressure of securing the Green Jacket and completing his career Grand Slam.

He did it last year and finally put an end to his 10-year drought without a major.

McIlroy could join Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win the Masters in consecutive years. Champions aren't built in a day, and in the press conference on the 7th, McIlroy talked about his past, which played a huge role in shaping him.

“I think in terms of what they instilled in me, I think work ethic is something that -- my mom worked night shifts. My dad worked multiple jobs. I think most people in this room know that. I never spent a lot of time with my parents together. It was either with my dad or with my mom because always the other one was working.”

McIlroy’s father, Gerry, worked around 100 hours a week - cleaning toilets and showers, serving as a bartender, and also working behind the bar. His mother, Rosie, worked at night, packaging rolls of tape at a 3M factory in Bangor, County Down.

“I think that that work ethic, that's the thing I feel like they instilled in me the most, and the belief. I talk about my dad being an eternal optimist and being able to see a silver lining in the worst of days, and I feel like that's what he's given me as well,” the 2025 Masters Champion said.

Introduced to golf by his father, McIlroy received a set of plastic clubs when he was just two years old. His father was a golfer himself, appearing once at a scratch handicap level.

Although golf is a relatively less expensive sport to play in Ireland, golf equipment and driving to different golf clubs weren’t cheap for McIlroy and his family.

“I’m a working-class man. We wanted to give our only child a chance,” Gerry had his intentions clear.

McIlroy expressed his gratitude on the amazing parents he has. As he looks to defend his major this week, his parents will be there to witness it at Augusta.

McIlroy is hungry for more and will look to win the Masters back-to-back.

Hosting the Champions Dinner, McIlroy will be confident as he steps foot on the Augusta National golf course.

“You think every time you achieve something or have success that you'll be happy, but then the goalposts move, and they just keep nudging a little bit further and further out of reach," McIlroy said.

A T2 finish at The Genesis Invitational in February and a T3 finish at the Dubai Invitational in January, McIlroy is showing signs of promise as always.
