Nick Faldo Revisited Memorable Augusta Week 30 Years Later That Still Sparks Curiosity

Thirty years is a long time in golf, but for those who were at Augusta National Golf Club on April 14, 1996, or watching from home, the memory still feels fresh.

Sir Nick Faldo marked the anniversary on Wednesday by sharing a video on X.

The 68-year-old revisited that week and recalled even the smallest details. "It's been 30 years since one of the most memorable weeks of my career," Faldo said in the video.

Faldo began that Sunday six shots behind Greg Norman, and by the end of the day, he had won by five. Norman’s lead didn’t just fade; it broke down step by step, right in front of everyone.

For Greg Norman, the day went the other way. He lost control of the game as the round slipped. By the back nine, the lead was gone, making it one of the most talked-about final rounds in major history.

In an interview with Golf Monthly last year, Faldo shared what was really happening behind his calm and composed look.

"I've lost count of the number of times people have come up to me and commented on how calm and confident I looked that day," Faldo said. "In truth, I was fighting inner battles with my swing and my mind the whole week."

Nick Faldo's 1996 Masters stands as the most complicated of his three Green Jackets, and his wins in 1989 and 1990 were special, back-to-back titles that put Faldo among the greats like Nicklaus. But 1996 was very different.

His personal life was in the news, and he hadn’t won a major in four years. Nothing suggested he would win at Augusta that week.

“It’s the best round I’ve ever played mentally,” Faldo said about that final Sunday. He has three Green Jackets, but this is the one he talks about the most.

Fans Revisit the Moment

The comments quickly filled with personal stories from fans.

"Followed you and Norman from hole 12 to the end of the round," one fan wrote. "What an amazing comeback! I did feel bad for Norman, though."

Another fan's response cut even deeper. "Still remember my Dad cheering you on that day and going nuts when you won,"

"That was the day I started following you, golf, and Greg Norman. Great memories," wrote another fan.

For many, the 1996 tournament remains a powerful and vivid memory.
