No Excuses: PGA Tour Pro Owns Devastating Playoff Loss Despite Heckling

Feb 9, 2026, 1:30 PM CUT

Under playoff pressure and crowd noise, Hideki Matsuyama chose accountability over blame and addressed the loss head-on.

During the playoff at the 2026 WM Phoenix Open, Hideki Matsuyama had to step away from his shot twice after noise from a fan.

Post WM Phoenix Open, Hideki Matsuyama took responsibility for the playoff result, while not raising the heckling incidents as a factor, instead keeping attention on his performance and the result, and stating he plans to learn from the moment and prepare for the next event. He said:

“Was grinding all weekend. Didn't have my best stuff, but hung in there. I wanted to avoid the playoff as much as I could, but I just hit a bad tee shot there in regulation at 18, and Chris made a good putt there in the playoff. So hats off to him.”

One moment came on the 18th green during a putt to win. The second came on the 18th tee in the playoff against Chris Gotterup.

On the 72nd hole in regulation, he was preparing for a 25-foot par putt that could have secured the win. However, a scream from the gallery made him step away from the ball. After resetting, he missed the putt and moved into a playoff.

Speaking about the loss, the eleven-time PGA Tour winner added, “Yeah, it's disappointing, shock. Learned from it, and just get back up on the horse next week.”

Matsuyama accepted the loss without blaming the situation, while Gotterup secured the win with strong scoring across his round.

While Matsuyama did not blame the hecklers, a Fox Sports night-shift media voice shared a strong opinion on X, calling out the fan behavior during the moment.

Warren Smith voiced his opinion on Hideki Matsuyama’s heckling incident

Warren Smith shared his view on the heckling incident involving Hideki Matsuyama, saying:

“If somebody at the @PGATOUR doesn't have an apology letter to Hideki Matsuyama written and published by sunset, he might be signed with LIV before halftime of the Super Bowl. They may not be able to control fans yelling out, but they can certainly apologise for them.”

Matsuyama had a successful run at the WM Phoenix Open, with wins in 2016 and 2017, along with a runner-up finish in 2026.

He is also among the eight players who have defended a title at TPC Scottsdale.
