Professional golfers Alex Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young go way back. Before battling for the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club on Sunday, both talked about their senior-freshman bond.
By the end of the tournament, Fitzpatrick finished fourth with a score of 12-under par, falling three shots behind Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan, while Young tied at tenth, six shots behind Reitan.
“He's great. I have nothing but good things to say about Cam. He really looked after me. Cam is an unbelievable golfer. I knew that in college, and it was only a matter of time before he started really playing some great golf. I love him to bits. He's great, so happy to be out here with him,” said Fitzpatrick.
In 2018-19, Cameron Young and Alex Fitzpatrick played together for one season at Wake Forest. Ever since then, both have kept in touch with each other.
Fitzpatrick received congratulatory texts from his senior when he won the Hero Indian Open in late March and again after securing his first PGA Tour victory at the Zurich Classic along with his brother Matt Fitzpatrick.
“No, nothing like that. He was too good to be doing any of that stuff,” Young said.
Fitzpatrick has always been highly regarded by Young and was never made to carry luggage by the American. While Young missed out on tying Rory McIlroy’s course-record 61, Fitzpatrick came out on top with a 7-under 64 on Saturday.
However, last week, the senior overshadowed the freshman by securing the Cadillac Championship, while the youngster finished 10 shots behind.
Fitzpatrick and Young’s Run Of Form
2026 has been a breakthrough season for Fitzpatrick. Securing the Hero Indian Open and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the Englishman has made a name for himself.
On the other hand, Young has also been in sensational form this year.
The World No. 3 already has two wins this season. Last week, he secured the Cadillac Championship adding on to his THE PLAYERS Championship victory in March.
Young also came close at Augusta, putting McIlroy to the test as he secured T3 in a very close contest. His tied for 3rd finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational was also commendable.
Both came up short at the Truist Championship on Sunday, but now turn their attention to the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club as they look to continue their strong form.
