Pádraig Harrington Says Jim Furyk Is a "Tough Character" as USA Seeks Ryder Cup Revenge

Pádraig Harrington finished the day at -4 and tied for 7th.

Pádraig Harrington has seen what a motivated American team looks like from the other side of the rope. The 2021 Ryder Cup captain has urged Europe not to underestimate Jim Furyk, and he is not mincing words about what the U.S. is bringing to Adare Manor in 2027.

According to Bunkered, Harrington made these comments to Irish Golfer after a pro-am at his home club, Stackstown, where he shot a 66.

While Luke Donald’s Team Europe aims to win a third Ryder Cup in a row, Harrington was quick to note Jim Furyk becoming the USA captain and posing a challenge.

“Jim’s a great guy, for sure. I think he’s very competitive,” he said. "The whole U.S. team wants revenge, and they're definitely going to leave no stone unturned, I would think," Harrington said.

The three-time major champion especially remarked on Furyk's tenacity.

"He's a tough, tough, tough character," he said.

Harrington captained Europe at Whistling Straits in 2021, the last time the U.S. won the Ryder Cup, by a margin of 19-9. He knows the Americans are hungry. He also believes the LIV Golf divide that complicated the U.S. team selection in 2025 will be less of a factor by the time Adare Manor arrives.

"The separation in the game of golf hasn't helped the U.S. Ryder Cup team figure out who their best players are," Harrington said. "But in another year's time, they'll have a lot of that figured out."

Europe won the 2025 Ryder Cup 15–13 at Bethpage Black. It was their first away win since the “Miracle at Medinah” in 2012.

Pádraig Harrington, however, insisted the U.S. was not at full strength that time.

“They didn't seem to have their best team last time, which usually means they'll be stronger next time around," he said.

Jim Furyk’s record as Ryder Cup captain also adds more discussion ahead of the 2027 event.

Jim Furyk Looks for Comeback After 2018 Loss and Already Knows USA’s Biggest Problem

Furyk’s previous stint as U.S. captain ended in a 17.5–10.5 loss at Le Golf National in Paris in 2018.

He now comes to Adare Manor hoping to do better and correct the mistakes from before.

"We're like 6-20 in foursomes the last three matches," Furyk said at a press conference ahead of the PGA Championship last month. "Right now, that's first and foremost on my mind. We cannot continue to dig the holes we are on Friday and Saturday."

He pointed directly at preparation as the root cause and cited Europe's tactical decision in Rome to schedule foursomes first as a turning point.

"The Euros made a key move in Rome and actually put that session first," Furyk said. "They realized that they thought they had an advantage, and it showed glaringly."
