World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler arrived at the Travelers Championship on Thursday with an unexpected problem before his opening round. Fortunately for him, playing partner and close friend Sam Burns was nearby to help.

Instead of heading straight to TPC River Highlands, the pair had to make an unplanned stop before teeing off together in Round 1, with Burns stepping in to help Scheffler sort out the issue.

The PGA Tour posted a video to X on June 26 confirming Scheffler had forgotten to bring a belt to the course. Burns then drove him back to their rental house to retrieve it before the opening round got underway.

"That's what friends are for," the Tour wrote. "And they're paired together for Round 1."

Scheffler went out and fired a bogey-free 6-under 64, sitting one shot behind first-round leader Eric Cole. Burns was not far behind, also going bogey-free on the day.

Scheffler spoke about the pairing after his first round, per ASAPSports.

"We've known each other a long time, so it's always fun. We actually hadn't played in competition in quite a while. So it was fun being out there today," he said. "Hopefully we'll keep it, Sam played solid today as well, so hopefully we'll keep the momentum going for tomorrow."

The two friends had not played together in competition for some time before Thursday. Neither made a bogey during the round.

Scheffler also addressed the importance of a fast start at TPC River Highlands.

"When the scoring is lower, it can be harder and harder to play catch-up," he said. "Sometimes here you get so far behind you can only shoot so low on some of these golf courses, so it's important to keep pace."

The opening round scoring average of 67.961 was the lowest of the PGA Tour season, per tournament reports. The low scoring continued into Friday, with several players taking advantage of the favorable conditions at TPC River Highlands.

Where Scottie Scheffler and Burns stand after Round 2

Scheffler heads into the weekend at 16-under par and atop the Travelers Championship leaderboard. The world No. 1 carded a 10-under 60 on Friday and narrowly missed a birdie putt on the 18th that would have given him a sub-60 round.

He holds a two-shot lead over Viktor Hovland, while Eric Cole and Akshay Bhatia are tied for third at 12-under, according to the official PGA leaderboard.

Burns, meanwhile, is chasing a sixth PGA Tour title and his first victory since winning the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

He beat Cameron Young 6 and 5 in the final at Austin Country Club. Burns remains in contention heading into the weekend at TPC River Highlands.
