The PGA Tour, the DP World Tour, and Golf Australia have combined to elevate Australia’s national championship.

For the first time ever, the PGA Tour has partnered with Golf Australia. LIV Golf had also been targeting this national open, but the PGA Tour secured the partnership.

“We are thrilled with this agreement between our Strategic Alliance partners, the DP World Tour and the Capital.com Australian Open,” said Christian Hardy, the PGA Tour’s senior vice president, international.

“Since our Tour’s inception over 50 years ago, national opens have been, and will continue to be, critical for us; the fact we currently sanction 17 in total around the world merely emphasises the point that we are Golf’s Global Tour,” he added.

The new deal between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Golf Australia will elevate the Capital.com Australian Open, increasing its A$2 million prize pool from 2027 onward, although the exact figure has not yet been disclosed.

“To have a national open of the stature of the Capital.com Australian Open amongst that number and to have it commit to us for another three years is great news, and further illustrates the strength of the partnership we enjoy with Golf Australia and the PGA Challenger Tour of Australasia.” said Hardy.

The agreement will offer a ‘distinct window in the global golf calendar’ to the Australian Open. As a result, the big names in golf are expected to become a common sight at the event.

For the next three years, the championship will be backed by the PGA Tour and co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia. The event has also received public backing from World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, who played at Royal Melbourne last year. This news will come as a huge blow to LIV Golf, which was also pursuing the national open.

LIV Golf's Pursuit of the Australian Open Unsuccessful

LIV has always aimed to expand the reach of the sport internationally. Part of its process to do so was targeting national opens in countries that had witnessed large crowds.

One of those events was LIV Adelaide, which recorded more than 115,000 fans in attendance this year. It became the highest-attended golf event in Australian history.

As a result, LIV was seeking a deal with the Australian Open to stage it. However, the PGA Tour has now entered the scene.

The DP World Tour has always considered national opens as its cornerstones, with 17 already included in its schedule.

The Australian Open will now benefit from its alliance with the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.
