The PGA Tour has announced a breakthrough multi-year partnership with Sompo, an insurance and financial services company. It will debut in Napa during the 2027 season before the tournament relocates to a new market as part of the PGA Tour's Championship Series in 2028.

Sompo will take over the sponsorship of the late July event at Silverado Resort’s North Course in Napa, California next year. It comes as a huge breakthrough for the American circuit.

“Just a few weeks after we announced our new competitive model, we are delighted to welcome Sompo as the first new sponsor supporting the PGA TOUR Championship Series that will launch in 2028,” said Dhruv Prasad, PGA TOUR chief commercial officer.

The event in Napa is set to take place from July 26 to Aug. 1 next year, and Sompo will take the mantle. However, this allocation is temporary.

“We look forward to debuting this partnership in Napa in 2027 and are excited to announce its future home in a new market for the PGA TOUR in the coming months,” he added, as per the PGA Tour.

In 2028, the PGA Tour will launch its new two-tier system, with Sompo moving to sponsor a Tier-1 event, as per Tuesday’s news release.

Under the revamped structure, the Championship Series will replace the current Signature Events model and feature roughly 23 to 24 elite tournaments with 120-player fields, while the Challenger Series will serve as the pathway for players to earn promotion.

“We are proud to partner with the PGA TOUR at such an exciting moment for the sport and to help shape the future of one of its premier events,” James Shea, CEO of Sompo Property and Casualty, said.

The North Course at Silverado Resort has a rich history, hosting an annual event from 1968 through 1980 and 2014 through 2025.

The PGA Tour left Napa after the 2025 season as part of a broader schedule reshuffle, ending the Fortinet Championship's run at Silverado. The 2027 return restores a regular-season stop to the Bay Area, albeit for one year before the tournament relocates in 2028 under the new Championship Series format.

The Robert Trent Jones-designed course will host the event in late July, when players will compete for valuable FedExCup points as the regular season enters its closing stretch ahead of the FedExCup Playoffs.

This announcement follows the PGA Tour's confirmation that the Travelers Championship will become the first designated Championship Series event in 2028, making Sompo the first new sponsor to join the circuit's revamped premier schedule.

PGA Tour announces first Championship Series event

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp announced the new two-tier schedule last month ahead of the Travelers Championship, and on Monday, it became the first event to be revealed as a Championship Series event.

“Being part of the upcoming PGA Tour Championship Series is validation of the collective effort that Travelers, the tournament team, fans and volunteers have invested over the past two decades," said Andy Bessette, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Travelers, as per Golf Channel.

Established in 1952, the Travelers has a prestigious legacy that will be carried forward into tier-1.

Other events are yet to be announced, but as per Golf Channel, some are expected to be announced before next month’s Tour Championship in Atlanta.
