The PGA Tour's new two-tier system will reshape how fans experience the sport starting from 2028. On Monday, the first event of the new tier-1 Championship Series was confirmed, and it's not a surprise.

Ahead of last month's Travelers Championship, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp revealed the new two-tier system. The signature event now becomes the first event to be added to the tier-1 series.

“Our goal every year is for the Travelers Championship to be one of the best tournaments on the PGA Tour,” said Andy Bessette, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Travelers. “Being part of the upcoming PGA Tour Championship Series is validation of the collective effort that Travelers, the tournament team, fans and volunteers have invested over the past two decades.”

The Travelers has cemented its status on the PGA Tour over the years. Since coming around in 1952, as the Insurance City Open, it has operated as a Signature Event for the last four years.

The Hartford-based event will now be part of the Tour’s new elevated series, as reported by Brentley Romine of Golf Channel.

“This partnership with Travelers and with the PGA Tour has taken the tournament to incredible new heights,” said Travelers Championship tournament director Nathan Grube. “We’re proud of the Travelers Championship, the economic impact it makes on our community and the state of Connecticut, and the hundreds of local charities that continue to benefit financially.” 

As announced by the Tour, roughly 23-24 events will be part of the Championship Series.

Leaving out the four majors, the Players Championship, the postseason, and the Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup, 15 tournaments will be lined up; the Travelers becomes the first.

As per Golf Channel, more Championship Series events will be announced before next month’s Tour Championship.

Rolapp was clear as to why he is bringing about the structural shift.

The PGA Tour’s sweeping changes are intended to cater to the interests of the fans and the partners of the American circuit.

“We are just organized now in a more simple understanding competitively so our fans can understand it, our partners know what they’re getting as far as value. So we think we’ve just organized the same tour into a much more interesting and competitive system,” Rolapp said at the Connecticut conference.   

With the top-ranked fields of approximately 120 players competing regularly at the Championship events, a new level of competitiveness will be on show.

On top of that, the tier-2 Challenger Series will also offer a twist in the tale, with immediate promotions to the tier-1 on the cards throughout the season.
