Ahead of the Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour announced sweeping changes to the circuit’s structure. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp made it clear that the decision had nothing to do with LIV.

Rolapp has always seen the upside of the rebel tour and pointed out its impact on the PGA Tour. However, this time around, the focus has solely been on the Tour’s progress.

"I've been pretty public by saying whatever happened with LIV or happened in the golf ecosystem before I got here, there was some good that came of it in that it maybe exposed some weaknesses in the PGA TOUR and our model, but this work was never about that,” said Rolapp as reported by GolfMagic.

"This work was about, whether LIV existed or not, for all the reasons I talked about, in this competitive landscape we operate in, how do you actually make the PGA Tour the best version of itself?” he added at the Connecticut conference.

The PGA Tour will now feature two series of events- the Championship Series and the Challenger Series. Between the two, there’ll be a relegation-promotion system.

The Tour’s Future Competition Committee, headed by Tiger Woods, put forth the changes in front of the Tour’s Policy Board, and they approved.

This move has been made with the fans and market demands in mind.

"Because if you're not changing and getting better, you can't expect to improve. That's what the marketplace necessitates. This was never about any competition," said Rolapp.

The Championship Series will regularly bring the top-ranked golfers together, promising even more engaging contests than the current format. 

The Challenger Series will run concurrently, and players will fight for their promotion to Tier 1.

Thus, the competitiveness at events will be on a whole different level, giving the fans what they want.

World No.2 Rory McIlroy wasn’t particularly in favour of the changes earlier, but now has shown his support.

McIlroy Releases Statement on the new PGA Tour schedule

McIlroy had earlier questioned the changes, likening the Challenger series to a “glorified Korn Ferry Tour.” However, now, the Irishman has showcased his support.

"Today's announcement is a positive step for professional golf," McIlroy said, released by PGA Tour Communications on X. "As more details emerge, it is encouraging to see the PGA Tour reaffirming the importance of meritocracy and creating a structure that will serve both players and fans well into the future." 

The status of historic international tournaments and national opens will be elevated by the PGA Tour, a move the Irishman has backed.

LIV Golf caused considerable changes in the professional golf landscape. However, McIlroy believed that the structural shift would put an end to uncertainty and division.
