PGA Tour Pro Parts Ways With the Longtime Caddie Behind His FedEx Cup Victory

via Usta

Ahead of this week’s Memorial Tournament, a couple of PGA pros have shuffled their partners on the bag. Among them is a former FedEx Cup winner who split with his longtime caddie but did not rule out a future reunion.

The 2014 FedEx Cup champion, Billy Horschel, has not been up to the mark since his hip surgery last year. And on June 3, Golfweek reported that Horschel had parted ways with longtime caddie Micah Fugitt. Taking his place is another veteran caddie, James Edmonson, who will feature on a trial basis.

Speaking about the change, Horschel said, "Simple as this, I said we are going to take a break for right now; obviously that means we are split, but that doesn’t mean that I may not work with Micah again, or in a couple months' time I may want Micah to come back on the bag."

May 30, 2023; Dublin, Ohio, USA; Billy Horschel walks the ninth fairway with his caddie Micah Fugitt during a practice round for the Memorial Tournament at Muirlfield Village Golf Club.

Currently ranked 94th in the FedEx Cup standings, the eight-time Tour winner is determined to turn things around at the event he won four years back.

Horschel and Fugitt paired up for the first time in 2012. They lifted the FedEx Cup in 2014. But despite the success, they split up in 2017.

After an over six-year split, the duo got back together in 2024. The pair also secured the Corales Puntacana Championship and the BMW PGA Championship following their reunion.

“I was fortunate enough that Micah agreed to come back on the bag last May, and Micah has been unbelievable. Even when we were playing really badly last year, when he came on the bag, he was positive the entire time.” Horschel said back then.

Now, at Muirfield, the 39-year-old will look to build some momentum with new caddie Edmonson.

The veteran caddie has previously worked with Ryan Palmer and most recently carried the bag for Brice Garnett at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Horschel's only top-10 finish of the season came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, while he has missed the cut in two of his last three starts.

However, Horschel wasn’t the only one to go for this change.

PGA Pros Make A Caddie Change Before The Memorial Tournament

Ahead of the Jack Nicklaus event that started on June 4, several PGA Tour pros changed caddies, much like Horschel. Six-time PGA Tour winner Tony Finau re-hired Giff Nielsen, ending a short stint with John Ellis, the former longtime caddie for Wyndham Clark.

Ellis joined alongside Finau at the RBC Heritage in April, and the duo’s best performance together was a T6 finish at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

However, now Ellis will join Max Homa’s team as a caddie. Max Homa also recently split with Lance Bennett and had a friend caddie for him at Colonial.

On the other hand, Carl Smith will be back on the bag for Sahith Theegala after missing the Charles Schwab Challenge last week.
