Phil Mickelson and His "Good Friend" Santa Claus: The Golden Moment We Never Knew We Needed

Christmas Day in golf takes fans back to Phil Mickelson embracing the holiday spirit with a special 'collaboration' with Santa Claus.

Back in 2019, Mickelson made a wish while interviewing his "good friend" Santa Claus. “I wanted to ask you about the 2018 request when I asked for a U.S. Ryder Cup victory. What happened?”

Santa’s response landed instantly, “U.S. Open. Naughty list!” Phil, playing along, replied, “Oh, yeah. Sorry about that. That won’t happen again. I’m sorry, Santa.”

In the 2018 Ryder Cup, Phil Mickelson played for Team USA after being selected as a captain’s pick by Jim Furyk in his 12th Ryder Cup appearance. Team Europe won decisively, defeating the United States 17.5–10½, led by standout performances from Francesco Molinari, Tommy Fleetwood, and Rory McIlroy.

Fortunately for Mickelson, 2019's wishes worked out better. “This year, when I asked for a win, calves, and abs, you kind of nailed all three.” Santa’s approval was simple and effective: “Nice list! Nice list.”

In 2019, Mickelson kicked things off with a T&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am win.

And Phil Mickelson's wishes for the following year came true

“As I asked for being part of a winning U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2020, what has to happen for that?” And Santa advised, “Stay on the nice list.” And that’s really important, even Mickelson nodded, “That’s great advice for all you out there as well.”

Team USA won the Ryder Cup in 2021. While Mickelson wasn't a part of the team, he became the oldest major champion after winning the PGA Championship in the same year.

Moments like this are exactly why the Phireside with Phil segment deserves a proper comeback. Philside featured quick chats, witty jokes, and a great deal of Phil making fun of himself.

Mickelson tried to relaunch the concept on YouTube, but it quietly stopped after just one episode months ago. Let us know in the comments if you want to bring the segment back.
