Walking onto the first tee of a major is pressure enough. Doing it alongside Phil Mickelson adds another layer.
When asked what he said to the six-time major champion, Ryan Peake kept it honest, barely keeping himself from laughing!
“No, he just introduced himself, which, you know, I don’t think he needs to introduce himself. I was well aware of who he was. I wouldn’t say nervous because I was playing next to Phil… I know your first major and things like that.”

When Peake played with Mickelson at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, Mickelson, a Masters champion and one of golf’s most decorated players, did not overstep.
“He wasn’t offering me help. I would have known I was in a bad place if he’d come over and offered me help.”
Instead, it was a normal conversation. “We just had a lot of normal chit-chat. Talked about family… nothing in particular... Grabbed his putter off him a few times and had a little feel of it. I mean, that’s the OG, that’s the one from the Masters.”
Mickelson’s Masters history is well documented, including victories in 2004, 2006, and 2010 at Augusta National. For a player making his major debut, that is not just equipment. It is history in your hands.
There was humor too. “He gave away golf balls… I yelled out, what about me?” Peake laughed. “Can you sign a glove as well? He’s your hero growing up.”
On the biggest stage, sometimes it is not advice that matters. It is the moment.
Where Heroes Eventually Become Competition
Golf stretches across generations in a way few sports can. Rory McIlroy once spoke about idolizing Tiger Woods, even copying his swing as a child in the early 2000s. By 2010, McIlroy was squaring off with Woods in major championships, and in 2012, they were at the Ryder Cup, facing off against each other.
Jordan Spieth, who watched Phil Mickelson win the Masters in 2004, 2006, and 2010 while growing up in Texas, eventually played alongside Mickelson on PGA Tour events and Presidents Cup teams.
However, once the game starts, admiration fades, and competition takes over. The player who signs your glove is also trying to beat you. In golf, heroes do not stay separate from the field. They become part of it.
