“Poor Taste”: Scottie Scheffler Explains Why He Stayed Quiet During Si Woo Kim’s 59 Watch

Scottie Scheffler knows the unwritten rules of golf history. When Si Woo Kim flirted with a historic 59 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, the World No. 1 went silent to avoid breaking his partner's momentum.

“I definitely wasn't going to tell him anything about his round today as we were out there. I would say it would definitely be in poor taste to remind somebody they're on 59 watch,” said Scheffler.

Kim was on a roll at the renovated TPC Craig Ranch. World No.1 Scheffler was impressive as well, but all eyes were on Kim as he was on 59 watch.

In many sports, including golf, there is an unwritten rule of not mentioning a historic score while it's happening. Scheffler was doing just that, as he compared playing with someone on 59 watch to a “no-hitter” in baseball. On Friday, he went through the same.

The World No. 1 felt Kim was one-upping him in every shot. Scheffler scored a bogey-free 8-under 63, which put him five strokes behind the South Korean at the end of the second round.

“Yeah, it was fun to watch. I was glad for myself to be able to kind of stay in the tournament. I made some nice putts there on the back nine, but it's always fun to watch Si Woo do his thing,” added Scheffler.

Kim was well on his course to reach the magic number of 59. However, his only bogey at the final hole left him two shots off that score.

Scheffler himself had a stretch where he shot a remarkable five under over four holes, which included a 46-foot eagle putt on the 12th hole.

With two rounds to go, let’s take a look at the consistency both Kim and Scheffler have been displaying.

Kim and Scheffler: Who has been more consistent this season?

Both Kim and Scheffler have made every cut this season, which highlights the high level of consistency that they have been showcasing.

However, Scheffler has a win to show for his impressive performances. In January, Scheffler secured The American Express title, where Kim finished tied for 6th.

Kim’s best finish yet has been a T2 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he ended up finishing seven strokes behind the winner, Justin Rose.

On the other hand, Scheffler has been runner-up three times and in three consecutive starts at The Masters, RBC Heritage (tied for 2nd), and the Cadillac Championship.

Both players have six top-10 finishes, and it will certainly be a close contest in the final rounds of the THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson this weekend.
