Louis Oosthuizen made it through three rounds at Valderrama. But on Sunday, before the final and 4th round began, he was out of a $30M LIV Golf Event.
A back injury ended his Andalucia tournament, and he himself broke the news on X.
"I unfortunately won't be taking part in the final round of LIV Golf Andalucia due to a back injury preventing me from performing at my best," Oosthuizen posted. "I will be replaced by the highly experienced Wade Ormsby."
Australia's Wade Ormsby stepped in as the South African's replacement.
Oosthuizen sat at 6-over-par through 54 holes at Valderrama, outside contention for the title heading into the final day.
At the top of the leaderboard, England's Tyrrell Hatton carried a two-shot advantage into the final round.
Oosthuizen is the 2010 Open Championship winner. He has finished runner-up at least once in all four major championships.
The tournament ran during a significant period for LIV Golf. The tour's primary backers, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, announced in March that they would no longer fund the venture beyond the end of the season.
This is not the first time Oosthuizen's back has ended his LIV Golf tournament early
Sunday's withdrawal at Valderrama was not an isolated incident for Oosthuizen. In June 2024, he withdrew from LIV Golf Houston before the second round because of a lower back injury. He woke up on Saturday morning with the problem after shooting a 3-under round on Friday.
Oosthuizen was replaced by Wade Ormsby on that occasion as well, who replaced him on Sunday.
"Unfortunately, I had to withdraw today with lower back issues," Oosthuizen said at the time. "Woke up not being great and tried everything, and won't be able to walk around and swing today."
Injuries have caused Oosthuizen to withdraw from tournaments several times. In April 2023, he pulled out of the Masters after the first round because of an elbow injury. He had shot a 76 in the opening round at Augusta National.
He showed signs of form earlier in the 2026 LIV Golf season, finishing tied eighth at LIV Golf Hong Kong, his first top-10 of the year, after carding three consecutive 5-under 65s following a slow start.
But now, this injury definitely breaks that momentum. As of now, there is no timeline yet for his recovery.
Do you think Oosthuizen's back injury will keep him out of the upcoming LIV Golf events? Let us know in the comments.
