Two decisions landed from the 2026 Open Championship this week, and both send the same message. No Creator Classic. No tolerance for hecklers.
Golf's oldest major is drawing a firm line around its traditions ahead of Thursday's opening round at Royal Birkdale.
R&A CEO Mark Darbon addressed both issues on Wednesday, July 15, at a pre-championship press conference. The decisions came as a direct response to the online golf movement. The crowd behaviour that has drawn headlines at recent majors, per BroBible.
"We could have staged a Creator Classic [prior to the Open.] We chose instead to do a last chance qualifying that’s more in line with our traditions," he said, according to Kevin Van Valkenburg on X.

The PGA Tour Creator Classic is a three-event series for well-known golf content creators. It is a chance to compete at professional venues for a $100,000 winner-take-all purse.
Creator Classic drew over 2.6 million views. It engaged almost 60 million fans across social media during its first four-week period. The Open had the option to run a similar event. It passed.
Heckler policy follows the same logic. Darbon confirmed that officials will remove fans who misbehave from Royal Birkdale.
It is under the new code of conduct, per Today's Golfer. He rejected suggestions that offenders should face a £10,000 fine. But removal from the grounds remains on the table for anyone who steps out of line.
The backdrop is impossible to ignore. At last month's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, New York, fans repeatedly mocked eventual winner Wyndham Clark during the final round. Security removed several hecklers from the course.
Clark's psychologist reportedly abandoned him during the round, per BroBible. Jordan Spieth later attributed part of the hostility to sports betting. He says fans wagering hole-by-hole have a financial incentive to root against specific players, per BroBible.
The R&A has heard enough. Royal Birkdale this week will not be the place for heckling or viral content creation.
The open stance on YouTube golf and what it means for the game
The online golf movement has grown significantly in recent years. Events like The Q at Myrtle Beach give content creators the chance to win spots in actual PGA Tour events.
The Creator Classic has featured well-known names including Paige Spiranac and Grant Horvat.
Notably, the PGA Tour itself chose not to stage a Creator Classic ahead of this year's Players Championship either. The series can be viewed across YouTube, Peacock and ESPN+, per BroBible.
The Last-Chance Qualifier, not a Creator Classic, was the event that opened this year's Open week at Royal Birkdale. One format produces a viral moment. The other produces a major championship entrant. The R&A chose the latter.
