World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was listed in the field but will not start this week. His reason for withdrawing from the Texas Children’s Houston Open is tied to a personal reason.
While the PGS Tour didn't clarify anything, the Golf Channel confirmed on Tuesday that the current withdrawal is not related to injury. Instead, it's great news for Scottie Scheffler as he stepped away due to the expected arrival of his second child.
Scottie Scheffler and his wife, Meredith, welcomed their first child, Bennett Scheffler, on May 8, 2024, weeks after his second Masters win and days before the 2024 PGA Championship.
Now, as Bennett Scheffler nears his second birthday, his family is looking forward to another reason to celebrate.
Meanwhile, the 29-year-old golfer is willing to wait another season for a win at Memorial Park Golf Course in Texas. He has finished runner-up three times in his last four starts there. The Texas Children’s Houston Open was part of his schedule to prepare for the 2026 Masters.
While some players, including five-time major champion Rory McIlroy, chose to skip the event, Scheffler had initially planned to compete.
So who has replaced Scottie Scheffler?
Matt Kuchar has replaced Scottie Scheffler in the field at Memorial Park following the withdrawal. Scheffler’s exit is the seventh at the Texas Children’s Houston Open since Sunday, and also brought Justin Lower into the field as the first alternate.
Kuchar’s record at this event outlines his past results. In 2014, he entered the final round with a four-shot lead but lost in a playoff to Matt Jones. He also finished T-8 in 2010 and repeated that result in 2011 during the same period of consistent play on tour.
His current season adds context to his entry this week. Kuchar has made one cut in four starts in 2026. However, he last competed with a win at the PNC Championship in December 2025, where he played alongside his son, Cameron.
With the event set at Memorial Park Golf Course, Kuchar now steps into the field and continues his schedule with this start.
