Fifteen years ago today, the world of golf lost Seve Ballesteros, and the sport has never been the same since.
On May 7, 2026, as the DP World Tour gathers in Catalunya, Spain, it will be a special moment to remember Severiano Ballesteros, a man who helped shape European golf. He passed away on May 7, 2011, and left behind a career that made a lasting mark on the sport.
Golf account Flushing It marked the anniversary on Wednesday, writing that his "charisma, talent and flair will never be matched." Fifteen years later, that still feels true.
He won 90 tournaments, captured five major titles, and spent 61 weeks as the world’s No. 1 player. As both a player and a captain in the Ryder Cup, he played a big role in making it one of golf’s biggest events today.
The numbers tell only part of his story. Seve played with confidence, creativity, and instinct, and fans loved watching him. He made recovering from difficult shots look like an art, and always played with great passion. From Augusta to St Andrews to Royal Lytham & St Annes, crowds followed him everywhere.
This week, players at the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship at Real Club de Golf El Prat are honoring him by wearing his most famous outfit on the opening day: navy trousers, a white polo shirt, and a navy sweater. It is the same outfit he wore when he won The Open at St Andrews in 1984.
His son, Javier Ballesteros, spoke about what that image represents. "My father never followed trends; he trusted his instinct, in his game and in his style," Javier said.
"What he wore was an extension of who he was. It's special to see that spirit still resonate today in a way that feels true to him and to remember him with this fitting tribute."
The tribute also continues through Seve Collection, a clothing brand inspired by his style on and off the golf course. It was created to honor the time when European golf was building its place in the world. The designs are inspired by the colors and styles Seve wore during his long career.
How Seve Ballesteros Changed the Ryder Cup and European Golf
Seve Ballesteros did not just win tournaments, but he changed what European golf believed it could achieve.
He played in the Ryder Cup from 1979 to 1995. During those years, he helped Europe beat America’s dominance in the 1980s and played a significant role in shaping the Ryder Cup into the event it is today.
As captain in 1997 at Valderrama, he led Europe to victory at home. This made him one of the few people to leave a big mark on the Ryder Cup as both a player and a captain.
He won five major championships in his career. This included three Open Championship titles in 1979, 1984, and 1988, along with two Masters wins in 1980 and 1983.
Even 15 years later, his influence is still strong, and this week in Spain, players wearing navy and white will help keep his memory alive.
