Rory McIlroy picked up the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, which is a huge honour in Britain and Ireland. However, "the most surprising omission," for McIlroy, came just a couple of days ago.
When the 2026 New Year Honours were announced, the list of people recognised by the King and the UK government included those who made contributions to sport, culture, and public life. However, Rory McIlroy wasn't part of the list.
That’s significant because many expected him to be knighted after such a stellar year. A Telegraph report suggested the reason for his omission isn’t anything McIlroy did recently on the golf course but stems from a historic tax-related issue.
Back in 2015, Rory McIlroy invested in a British urban regeneration scheme that offered tax relief under the Business Premises Renovation Allowance.

Subsequently, UK tax authorities investigated that scheme for potential avoidance. While there is no suggestion McIlroy did anything untoward or tried to avoid paying any tax, the fact HM Revenue & Customs raised an issue seems to have been a “red flag” in the vetting process.
That type of intervention by tax officials has hampered other prominent figures in the past. Most famously, David Beckham's knighthood was delayed for years until it became a reality earlier in 2025. Yet, others were luckier than the golf star.
Stars Who Took Home Top New Year Honours as Rory McIlroy Missed Out
Veteran ice dancing icons Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were among the biggest winners.
Other well-known names from sports were also recognised. Sarina Wiegman received an honorary damehood for guiding the England Lionesses to major tournament success. Leah Williamson was awarded a CBE for her leadership and impact on England’s women’s football team.
Several of Williamson’s teammates were honoured as well. Radcliffe was recognised for her long-standing contribution to British sport, while Olympic sport climber Toby Roberts received an honor following his breakthrough achievements.
