Rory McIlroy has become the first golfer in 36 years to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Golf champion Rory McIlroy edged out two reigning world champions to become BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He beat Rugby World Cup winner Ellie Kildunne and Formula One World Champion Lando Norris to claim one of British sport’s highest individual honors.

What made it even more special is that McIlroy became the first golfer to win the award in 36 years. And he is only the third golfer to win this award. The first ever golfer was Dai Rees, who won in 1957, and then Nick Faldo in 1989.

McIlroy’s victory showed how strongly his year resonated with fans, even in a field packed with historic achievements. And with this BBC personality of the year, McIlroy also won the European Order of Merit, which is now known as the Race to Dubai, for the seventh time.

Kildunne’s Rugby World Cup triumph marked a landmark moment for English rugby. Meanwhile, Norris’ F1 world title capped a breakthrough season in motorsport. Yet McIlroy’s body of work, combined with his visibility and leadership, proved decisive.

Beyond the score and finishing on the golf course. McIlroy’s fans also showed their love as the winner was decided by the votes only.  With this new addition to his awards and trophies, 2025 has been incredible for Rory McIlroy's career.
