As the PGA Tour moves forward with its new two-track structure, CEO Brian Rolapp used Tuesday's announcement of the Tour's new competitive model in Connecticut to explain why he believes the Challenger Series differs from the Korn Ferry Tour.

The comments came after world No. 2 Rory McIlroy drew similarities between the two circuits during his U.S. Open press conference at Shinnecock Hills last week.

"If you look at the Challenger Series events, they'll be at venues you recognize. They'll be for healthy purses, which we announced today. They'll include a subset of the same 200 and change players that we have today. That is much different than what the Korn Ferry Tour is today,” Rolapp said in Connecticut.

Significant courses will feature in the Challenger Series and will include hefty payouts, unlike what McIlroy believed when he said, “certain events that might lose their stature if a sponsor doesn’t pony up $30 million.”

Rolapp further elaborated, as seen in the PGA Tour's YouTube video, that the number of events on the Tour will remain the same.

"I think the best way to think about what we're doing here is that right now we have 47 events at the PGA Tour. We'll have 47 events going forward. That current model serves roughly 230 players. We'll serve that amount of players, the same,” he added.

A minimum of 20 players from the PGA Tour Challenger Series will be promoted to the PGA Tour Championship Series at the end of each season, making it resemble a “feeder” circuit like the Korn Ferry Tour.

However, players can also earn immediate promotion to Tier 1 by winning multiple Challenger Series events in a season or securing a major championship.

Rolapp also explained why he and the committee went along with the change.

Why the structural shift in the PGA Tour

Rolapp revealed why the change is being brought about.

"We are just organized now in a more simple understanding competitively so our fans can understand it, our partners know what they're getting as far as value. So we think we've just organized the same tour into a much more interesting and competitive system,” Rolapp said at the conference.

The Championship Series will bring the top-ranked golfers together regularly, promising even more engaging contests than the current format.

“This is an exciting moment for the game of golf,” wrote Tiger Woods in his X post today.

Only time will tell how the new schedule will shape up or whether, as McIlroy suggested, the original PGA Tour schedule was suitable as well.
