When career Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy shares information about his equipment switches, almost the entire golf community takes notes.

On January 15, DP World Tour shared a section of McIlroy's interview on X in which he addressed updating a few pieces of his equipment. McIlroy said he had been considering the switch for a while, especially after noticing that slight mishits with his 5-iron in Dubai last year were coming up "10 to 15" yards short instead of the usual "5 to 7". 

The Northern Ireland-born golfer also mentioned his remedy for the issue, saying, "I just asked the guys at TaylorMade to build me up a set. I actually went down to Australia with them, and with that firm turf down there, I felt like those irons were going through the turf better than the blades."

The irons McIlroy tested in Australia were TaylorMade P7CB cavity-back models, which offered more forgiveness and a leading-edge design to help the club move through firm turf more cleanly. As a result, he moved away from his previous Rors Proto blade irons.

McIlroy added that he has been practicing with the setup at home and is also putting a new 2026 golf ball in play this week, saying the early results have been positive and the latest round was a good test.

The ball he is using is the 2026 TaylorMade TP5 golf ball. While full details have not been released yet, McIlroy said the ball launches lower, produces more spin around the greens, and performs well on 60 to 70-yard shots during testing. 

Well, the 36-year-old shouldn't have many complaints about updating his kit components, given the results they are yielding.

Rory McIlroy started the 2026 Dubai Invitational on a positive note

It can be safely said that McIlroy’s equipment changes are paying their dividends. The 36-year-old had an eventful start to the 2026 Dubai Invitational on January 15.

McIlroy took a first-round lead in the tournament. He carded a 5-under 66, earning a one-shot lead over Connor Syme and David Puig. He also scored four birdies in his first five holes and opened up a three-shot advantage early.

However, his pace slowed on the back nine, where he missed a few. Still, he remained pleased with how the round played overall. Currently, he is tied for first place with Marcus Armitage and Thriston Lawrence.

It remains to be seen how the two remaining days of the tournament play out for McIlroy, especially considering the gear upgrades he went for.
