World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is dealing with a minor injury ahead of the PGA Championship as he walked away from his practice round earlier today.
Last week at the Truist Championship, McIlroy developed a blister underneath the nail of his right pinky toe. It wasn’t causing much of a problem for the Irishman, but now the issue seems to have worsened.
“Rory McIlroy went out to play a nine-hole practice round, and midway through that practice round, he walked off the golf course because of that right pinky toe,” said the Sky Sports Golf presenter.
McIlroy showed the blister to media members earlier, suggesting the injury was minor. However, things appear to have taken a turn now as the World No. 2 ended his round midway.
Last week at Quail Hollow Club, McIlroy did have “a slight limp” due to the blister. However, the 37-year-old admitted that it wasn’t creating any problem with his golf swing.
“He's going to bandage it and put on a new pair of shoes that he's been fitted for. And he said he should be comfortable, get a little more healing tonight. He is not worried about that little pinky should be okay for the PGA Championship,” the presenter added.
McIlroy will reportedly get a separator for his foot. The constant rubbing between “his pinky toe and the fourth toe” is causing him some pain at the moment.
However, there’s no doubt that the six-time major champion will feature at Aronimink Golf Club, but he’ll certainly hope to get rid of this minor issue as soon as possible.
McIlroy’s Record At The PGA Championship
The Irishman already has two Wanamaker Trophies to his name.
In 2012, McIlroy secured his first PGA Championship victory by winning by eight strokes, breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record margin of seven set back in 1980.
His last win at the PGA Championship came at Valhalla in 2014. With a score of 16-under par, McIlroy secured the title by one shot over Phil Mickelson.
Since then, McIlroy has found it difficult to secure a top-five finish in this major. A T7 finish in 2023 remains his best performance since his last win.
The World No. 2 will look to overcome the toe blister and add to his two Wanamaker Trophies at Aronimink Golf Club.
