Rory McIlroy Makes Honest Admission: “I’ll Never Stop Singing Scottie’s Praises”

Rory McIlroy maybe one of the most renowned golfers himself, but he has no issues with appreciating Scottie Scheffler.
McIlroy, the World number 2 is preparing to defend his AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He appeared in a press conference ahead of the tournament and revealed the reason why he doesn't mind appreciating the World number 1, Scheffler.
An X update on 11 February, displayed McIlroy’s take on the "gap in talent between Scottie Scheffler and everyone else”. Instead of promoting his own position, Mcllroy said, "Scottie just had his 17th top-10 in a row. You look at him last week, he shoots two over in the first round, and he just pieces it together again, finds a way, has a chance to win on Sunday”.
He continued, “He's relentless. And I'll never stop singing Scottie's praises because he's incredible at what he's doing and the way he does it”.
McIlroy also added, “And that's never, you know, I've had nice runs like that…. And I think anyone that wants to catch Scotty, or get anywhere close, is going to have to consistently bring that sort of game week in, week out like he does. He’s really the first one since Tiger that’s doing this.”.
And no one can deny Rory McIlroy’s narrative. The world of golf saw Scottie Scheffler’s special qualities at the 2021 Ryder Cup, where Scheffler went 2-0-1 for the victorious U.S. team. The 29-year-old star has also earned 4 of the 16 majors from 2022 to 2024.
He also won 2 Masters in 2022 and 2024, and the US PGA Championship in 2025. Winning gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics has only enhanced his reputation.
Despite McIlroy's praise the World number 1, the two have been in healthy contest over the years. And a legendary golfer loves the competition between them.
Jack Nicklaus appreciates the Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler's on-course rivalry
Last year, during his appearance on the Sky Sports Golf podcast, Jack Nicklaus compared McIlroy and Scheffler's games and provided his opinions on both.
The 18-time major champion said, “I see myself more in Scotty,” and welcomed their on-course competition mentioning that the game was “very blessed” to have such golfers.
He said, ”Scottie has learned at a fairly young age that keeping the ball in play is key. He's long, he's certainly long enough, as long as the rest of the guys. But he doesn't try to be”.
According to Nicklaus, Scottie, “makes sure that he puts it in play so that he's got a second shot to play. I think that wins golf tournaments more often”. And he thinks Scottie’s path is impressive and “he knows exactly what he's doing”.
Nicklaus also appreciated Rory for winning the Masters. He said, “I think that The Masters has been a bugaboo for him for 10 years. And I think that once he got The Masters behind him, the reward was the Grand Slam, so I'm very happy for him”.
While there's little doubt that both McIlroy and Scheffler are top-tier golfers, whom do you like more?
