World No. 2 Rory McIlroy responded after the PGA Tour approved major changes to its competitive structure.

McIlroy released an official statement on June 23 after the PGA Tour approved the Future Competition Committee's plans. The changes will take effect in 2028.

PGA Tour Communications posted the statement on X.

"Today's announcement is a positive step for professional golf," McIlroy said. "As more details emerge, it is encouraging to see the PGA Tour reaffirming the importance of meritocracy and creating a structure that will serve both players and fans well into the future."

McIlroy also spoke about the international side of the new plan. He said the partnership between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour is designed to help grow golf around the world.

He added that improving historic international tournaments and national opens is very important for the future of the sport. Also, it is something he strongly supports.

McIlroy ended by speaking about the current state of professional golf. He said the sport has gone through several years of uncertainty and division, which has not been good for either players or fans.

Under the proposal, the PGA Tour would split into two tiers, led by a Championship Series featuring top players across 23 to 24 events with 120-player fields, a 36-hole cut, and purses starting at $20 million.

The Challenger Series will serve as the primary pathway into the Championship Series across a minimum of 20 events, with minimum purses of $4 million per event.

Tiger Woods and Brian Rolapp both reacted to Tuesday's PGA announcement

Tiger Woods chaired the Future Competition Committee that recommended the new structure. Both he and PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp responded publicly on Tuesday.

On X, Woods backed the announcement and said he was honored to stand alongside Brian Rolapp as the PGA Tour unveiled its new model for 2028 and beyond at the Travelers Championship.

He called it an exciting moment for golf.

“It has been a privilege to lead the Future Competition Committee, and I am proud of the work we have done to build the best version of the PGA TOUR for future generations of players and fans,” he wrote in a post on X on June 23, 2026.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp addressed fans directly. "Today marks a pivotal moment for the PGA Tour as we move forward with a new competitive system, starting in the 2028 season," he said in a letter to fans.

"Throughout this process, we have listened closely to players, partners, and our fans. You told us you wanted to see the best players in the world competing against one another more often."

Officials will announce the full schedule for both series in 2027. They also plan to introduce a revamped postseason format that will include match play.
