The number of accolades Rory McIlroy has amassed takes a lot of hard work and dedication, and for him, the resolve to be the best version of himself comes from one of his own virtues.

On March 5, 2026, McIlroy took to the platform of Fried Egg Golf to discuss various aspects of his personality and game. While answering a different question, the 36-year-old disclosed what he thinks resilience is. McIlroy said, “People frame it as resilience, but I don't really think it is. It is resilience in terms of bouncing back from setbacks and performing."

Subsequently, the Northern Ireland-native counted his optimism as the source of his resilience. He said, "But honestly, it's about having hope and about seeing the good in things. That's where my resilience comes from. It's not from this grit and determination and like this macho alpha side of myself."

If the trophies and records are ignored, McIlroy’s message says something different. He is not talking about having a warrior mindset or being a tough competitor. He just believes that things will fall your way once you keep working, and that belief keeps him coming back to play.

With the calculated approach required to excel in golf, the players who last a long time are often seen as very hardworking. But McIlroy thinks differently.

He believes hope, not toughness, helps a player stay at the top for years, and he didn't have to look far away from home to develop this attitude.

The Man Behind Rory McIlroy's Mindset

Before mentioning the source of his resilience amid the Fried Egg Golf episode, McIlroy confessed that he had more resemblances with his father than he thought. Well, his father, Gerry McIlroy, was the man who influenced him to be optimistic.

Gerry grew up in public housing near Belfast. He lived close to the Hollywood Golf Club, and that is where he first started loving golf and later became a very skilled player.

When Gerry saw that his son had a special talent, he started working very hard to support him. In the morning, he cleaned toilets, in the afternoon, he worked as a bartender, and in the evening, he went back to the bar to work again.

For more than ten years, he did not take any holidays. He just believed his son was worth all the hard work. Rory watched his father live this way for many years. And as he confessed, slowly, without even noticing it, he gradually incorporated his father's quality of being optimistic.

Do you think Gerry McIlroy deserves more credit for Rory's success?
