On December 17, Rory McIlroy appeared on The Fried Egg Golf Podcast, where he recalled playing against his junior golf rival and got nervous because of a single golf ball.

McIlroy recalled playing the 2000 Doral Junior Publix, where he saw the familiar face of Philip Francis. At first, McIlroy didn't worry because Francis was the guy he "always used toplay against in these junior events."

However, that day, the amateur golfer pulled out a sleeve of prototype balls McIlroy had never seen before. "I was like, I have no chance against this guy [Philip Francis]. How am I going to beat him?” Rory McIlroy said during the podcast.

"That was the first time I ever saw the Pro V1," said Europe's first male golfer to complete the career Grand Slam. Yet, using a prototype ball wasn't the only thing special about Franics.

Between 1999 and 2002, Francis won four straight Junior World Golf Championships, completing a four-year winning run, breaking Tiger Woods' record. However, their paths never converged on the professional stage.

Rory McIlroy headed in a different direction

McIlroy later turned professional in 2007 and signed with Titleist, the brand he had used during his final years as an amateur. It was in 2007 when McIlroy used a full bag of Titleist clubs along with the upgraded Pro V1x ball.

Francis, by contrast, later said that his interest in the game declined during his college years, as his focus on swing mechanics increased and he no longer enjoyed playing in the same way as earlier in his career.

Despite turning pro in 2011, he left the sport for good around 2015. So Rory McIlroy and Francis's rivalry never blossomed beyond the junior circuit.

Meanwhile, McIlroy, who once got nervous at the sight of cutting-edge gear, uses some of the best equipment available today. He currently uses a TaylorMade TP5 golf ball.

McIlroy switched from the TP5x to the TP5 before his first start of the season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and continued using the TP5 in events through the 2025 season.
