Rory McIlroy to Step Away Briefly After Demanding PGA Championship Week

Rory McIlroy is stepping away from the tour for two weeks. The break follows a physically and mentally taxing PGA Championship defined by injury and crowd altercations.

McIlroy posted a final-round one-under 69 on Sunday at Aronimink Golf Club to finish at four under for the tournament. British golfer Aaron Rai won by three shots. After the round, McIlroy confirmed his schedule going forward.

"I'm going to take a couple weeks off, and then Memorial will be my next one," McIlroy said.

McIlroy identified the specific holes that cost him the lead.

"I think not birdieing the two par-5s and making the bogey at the drivable par-4 13th," he said. "To me I felt like I played the golf I needed to play the rest of the way. If I birdied the two par-5s and turned that 5 into a 3 on 13, the day looks very different."

McIlroy arrived at Aronimink as the reigning Masters champion, but a toe injury disrupted his week early. After removing the nail from his little toe, he was seen limping during Tuesday's practice round and left the course in a golf cart after three holes.

He shot a 66 in the third round before Sunday's final round.

During Sunday's final round, a fan heckled Rory McIlroy on the 16th hole after his chip rolled into a bunker. McIlroy responded and pointed the fan out to security before finishing the round without further issues.

McIlroy faced similar heckling at the Ryder Cup last fall. McIlroy and the European team dealt with persistent heckling throughout the event. His wife, Erica McIlroy, was hit by a can thrown by a fan in the crowd.

McIlroy addressed his calendar Grand Slam chances heading into the summer.

McIlroy is the only active player with a shot at a calendar-year Grand Slam in 2026 after winning the Masters. No player has ever won all four majors in the same calendar year.

"I think it's possible," McIlroy said. "But it's incredibly difficult to achieve. There's a reason that no one's been able to do it before in the history of the game."

He added, "The best thing that you can do is give yourself a chance in each one and then just see where the chips fall on the Sunday."

The U.S. Open will take place from June 18 to 21 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton. After that, The Open Championship will be played at Royal Birkdale in July.

So far, eight players have won the Masters Tournament and The Open Championship in the same year. Tiger Woods was the most recent player to do it in 2005.
