Rory McIlroy arrived at Bay Hill aiming to stay in contention, but the week took a different direction. The five-time major champion withdrew from the tournament he won in 2018, bringing his Arnold Palmer Invitational campaign to an early end.
The decision came shortly before the start of the third round on Saturday. Rory McIlroy had climbed inside the top 10 after a 4-under 68 in the second round before stepping away from the event.
However, during his pre-round routine, McIlroy began feeling discomfort in his back while warming up. As he continued hitting balls on the range, the issue worsened, leading him to withdraw from the tournament before the round began.

The 36-year-old later explained the situation in a statement, saying, “While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back. As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back.”
That decision also comes with the upcoming schedule in mind. Rory McIlroy also had the upcoming schedule to consider. He is set to defend his title at the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass next week and return to Augusta next month as the Masters champion.
Speaking to Golf Channel, the 29-time PGA Tour winner said he could have tried to continue through the pain, but chose not to push through the spasms as he felt the risk was not worth it.
Instead, he decided to focus on rest and treatment in the hope of being ready for TPC Sawgrass.
Career Grand Slam winner later also confirmed the decision in his statement, saying, “Unfortunately, I'm not able to continue and have to withdraw. I was excited to compete this weekend. I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational a great finish and look forward to being back next year.”
The withdrawal also adds to a short list in his career. This marks only the third time McIlroy has stepped away from a tournament after it had already begun.
Rory McIlroy Records Third Mid-Tournament Withdrawal of His Career
Rory McIlroy's decision also ends a 13-year gap without a mid-tournament withdrawal. The 2025 Amgen Irish Open winner had not stepped away from an event after teeing off since 2013.
This marks the third mid-tournament withdrawal of his professional career.
McIlroy previously withdrew from the 2009 Nedbank Challenge due to illness and pulled out of the 2013 Honda Classic after eight holes, later citing wisdom-tooth pain and saying he was not in a good place mentally.
