Rory McIlroy's Most "Horrific” Purchase That Still Makes Him Cringe: The PGA Tour Pro Once Revealed

Rory McIlroy has never shied away from laughing at his younger self, and one story still makes him cringe.

When asked about his first Tour paycheck, the PGA Tour star did not hesitate. “Yes. A watch,” McIlroy said. When the interviewer followed up with surprise, he doubled down and made it worse.

“With diamonds around it. It was horrific. I can’t believe it. It was like the worst purchase ever. It was so bad.” Rory McIlroy turned pro in 2007, when he was 18, and even signed with International Sports Management.

At the time, McIlroy was a young player suddenly earning real money on golf’s biggest stage. Like many rookies, the temptation to splurge was strong. But even he admits that the decision did not age well. The watch became a reminder of how fast success can arrive and how easy it is to make choices you later regret.

Things got more awkward when the interviewer asked if he remembered the make and model. McIlroy laughed it off and shut that door quickly. “I do. It’s not the make and model that I’m sponsored by now, so I’m not going to say it.”

Though McIlroy has played in some PGA Tour events, including the 2009 PGA Championship as a pro, his full-time PGA Tour season began in 2010.

The moment perfectly captures McIlroy’s growth. From early flashes to winning the Masters in 2025, the U.S. Open in 2011, the 2012 & 2014 PGA Championships, and the 2014 Open Championship (British Open).

Bigger Investments Rory McIlroy Would Make Later

As Rory McIlroy’s career progressed, so did the scale and sophistication of his purchases and investments. Beyond that early diamond watch, Rory McIlroy’s money story looks very different today.

Most of his wealth now comes from tournament winnings, endorsements, business projects, and real estate. By 2025, his net worth is estimated to be around $250 million, built largely through long-term deals and high off-course income.

McIlroy signed a major 10-year endorsement deal with Nike, reported to be worth up to $250 million. He also has an equipment partnership with TaylorMade.

Away from playing, he co-founded Symphony Ventures, a firm that invests in technology- and sports-related companies. Rory also joined Tiger Woods to launch TMRW Sports, which runs the Tomorrow's Golf League (TGL).

In terms of lifestyle, McIlroy has invested in property as well. He owns a luxury home at The Bear’s Club in Florida, showing how his career earnings have turned into long-term assets rather than short-term splurges.
