Rory McIlroy has skipped several events throughout the year, and as the season winds down, the Irishman looks set to fall short of the PGA Tour's 15-event minimum requirement.

Under the “Home Tour Rule,” international members must play at least 15 PGA Tour events to avoid permit restrictions and losing their Tour card. While McIlroy is unlikely to reach that mark, a provision in the PGA Tour handbook could still offer him a way out.

McIlroy has made just nine PGA Tour starts in 2026 so far and is projected to finish short of the Tour's 15-event minimum requirement.

"Notwithstanding the above, the Commissioner, upon application by a foreign member and for medical reasons or other extraordinary circumstances that the Commissioner, at his discretion, determines to be a valid reason for not playing in at least 15 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments, may reduce the 15 (or 12 as the case may be) tournament requirement," reads the 2026 PGA Tour player handbook.

According to Bob Harig of The Daily Drive, the handbook clearly states that PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan can grant McIlroy a discretionary exemption to keep his membership intact for 2027, even if he does not meet the established minimum.

McIlroy's medical withdrawals may now work in his favor. He pulled out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to back muscle spasms and struggled the following week at The Players Championship.

After nearly a month away, he returned to Augusta to successfully defend his title before taking another month off and skipping the RBC Heritage and Cadillac Championship at Doral for non-medical reasons.

The possibility of an exemption has again put McIlroy's reduced playing schedule under the spotlight, a topic he has addressed openly in the past.

McIlroy on his shortened schedule

McIlroy has always been open about skipping events. Even last year, the Irishman skipped signature events and shed some light on his thought process behind the decision.

“I’ll always choose the schedule that best fits me, and this year (2025) that meant skipping a few signature events. I might skip less (in 2026). I might skip the same amount, I don’t know,” said McIlroy at the Tour Championship last August according to golfchannel.

McIlroy has opted for balance in his life. He also cited the great Tiger Woods in support of his argument.

"That's what Tiger used to do. He picked and chose what events he wanted to play, where he felt like he had the best cadence to his schedule, and where he had the best chance to win. I think what Scottie and I are doing at the minute is no different,” he said.

McIlroy has long favored a lighter schedule, and with the 15-event minimum likely out of reach, he will be hoping for a disciplinary exemption for 2027.
