Rose Zhang is among the most promising talents in women's golf. She has enjoyed a successful career for roughly four years. Before joining the ranks of professionals in 2023, she dominated as the world’s No. 1 amateur for a staggering 141 weeks. She recently made headlines again after obtaining a degree in communications from Stanford University.
Zhang posted her recent success on her social media, bringing in hundreds of comments from fans and fellow LPGA Tour players. What is noteworthy is how she successfully balanced her elite amateur golf career and NCAA championships while juggling her studies. Of course, the journey wasn’t always smooth for her, but her final success made it all worthwhile.
Soon after the viral post went online, LPGA pros took to congratulating her on her graduation. However, one comment that particularly stood out was from Michelle Wie West, saying, “Hahaha dude, I was trying to figure out what shoe you were wearing, and then I realized it was ur sock tan.”
The comment quickly attracted attention on social media, bringing in hundreds of likes and some funny comments. One fan stated that West’s comment was the sign of a true golfer—one who notices things others wouldn’t, like a sock tan.
Zhang’s success, however, had not been a walk in the park. She managed to handle the steady pressures of her golfing and academics and emerged victorious—but not without challenges.
How Rose Zhang Balanced Books and Birdies at Stanford
The initial balance between Zhang’s academics and golf was challenging. As per SI, Zhang discussed how she found it difficult to juggle both commitments but never failed to honor them.
“I'm taking a stats class, so I had to finish last night at around 12:30. This morning was a very early pro-am time, so I didn't have too much time to rest,” she admitted at the 2024 HGV Tournament of Champions.
Zhang also discussed certain health-related issues she faced that caused her to feel less energized and motivated. However, she quickly sought help from a nutritionist who guided her on what foods to avoid that may have been impacting her performance.
Furthermore, she talks about how she ended up with a broken sleep pattern due to the pressures of balancing academics and golf.
“It’s a lot of work. I think one mistake I made last year was when I had an off-season and was at school full-time with 20 units. I had a couple of hard classes and lost a lot of sleep," she said.
Nonetheless, Zhang admits that her time at Stanford acted as a catalyst for her motivation and performance. She shared how she enjoyed the academic intensity and on-campus activities, feeling exhilarated by them.
She ends on a happy note, stating the importance of maintaining your own pace without comparing yourself to anyone else.
“Everyone is busy; no matter what you're doing, everyone has their own schedules. You're kind of just a fish in the sea where you can do whatever you want, and you prioritize your own kind of needs and responsibilities," she added.
Although these challenges tested Zhang’s limits, her dedication, discipline, and willpower helped her manage both and grow as an individual and an athlete.
