Scottie Scheffler has once again reminded the golf world why he is one of the sport’s most dominant forces. Although Scheffler’s PGA Tour has not gone entirely according to plan, things have started looking up as he now sits on top of the FedEx Cup points.

After putting together a commanding performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the World No. 1 made a historic achievement: tying a course record. He spoke to the media after his second round at the TPC Southwind, calling it a “dream start”. 

“You always want to try to get off to a good start. I was able to do that today. Really just a dream start,”  Scheffler said, via CBS Sports. 

He began his day with five straight birdies, matching his career best, and added another on the 7th hole. He finished the day with 11 birdies overall. It totaled a 9-under 61. He also reflected on his performance and how he was able to build on the momentum.

“Probably one of the best starts I’ve had on Tour, to be honest with you. I couldn’t tell you a time where I’ve been lower early in the round. Yeah, just a good start and was able to continue to strike the ball and execute,” Scheffler added, per the August 14 CBS Sports report.

The World No. 1 also spoke about his previous day’s performance, which had a lot of near misses.

“Yesterday was a day in which I felt like I played better than my score, but also early in the round I was out of the fairway a lot. So it could have been a day in which my score could have definitely been worse, and it definitely could have been a lot better. But today was a day in which I felt I got a lot out of the round,” the golfer said. 

After a record of 9 under 61 Scottie Scheffler will be looking forward to carrying the same momentum into the rounds to follow. 

Scottie Scheffler tabbed as favorite to win the FedEx Championship 

Coming off the high of matching the course record of 9 under 61, Scheffler has another positive to add to his list this week. According to an August 15 report by CBS Sports’ Robby Kalland, Scheffler seems poised to win the FedEx Championship this year. 

“The odds list bears out that this has become a three-horse race, with Scheffler unsurprisingly the massive favorite. He proved on Saturday that he can withstand a slow start and still turn things around mid-round and he will be plenty comfortable playing alongside Burns on Sunday.”

Kalland further explained why it could be difficult for Sam Burns to catch up to Scottie Scheffler.

“As deserving as Burns is of a win this season, it’s going to be uphill sledding to reel in and pass Scheffler on a course that seems so well-suited to his game right now,” the analyst added.

With Scheffler slowly gaining momentum heading into Sunday, the World No. 1 will look to add the FedEx Champion title to his resume.
