Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian Reveals How His Daughter Made Golf Feel Different

For Alexis Ohanian, golf stopped looking like an exclusive sport the moment his daughter saw it differently.

During a press conference at the TGL Playoff Finals on Tuesday, Ohanian described how a routine with eight-year-old Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. reshaped his view of the sport.

“I still don't play golf. I'm still terrible at it. But every Sunday I take Olympia, and so here's this little Black girl who's gone to a golf course here in South Florida every Sunday for a few years now. She genuinely thinks that golf is a sport for girls,” Ohanian said.

That perspective did not come from messaging. It wasn’t anything planned. Just showing up every week, taking lessons with Brittany Ferrante, getting better bit by bit. At some point, even making par during a 2024 practice round stopped feeling like a big deal.

He didn’t think much of it at the time.

“It was probably a year into it that I realized she thought all the old white guys on the driving range were just waiting for their daughters,” he added.

That’s what stuck with him. What she saw every week simply felt normal to her. Ohanian pointed to Serena Williams as an example, noting how that kind of shift has already played out in other sports.

Alexis Ohanian on TGL, Social Media, and Golf’s Changing Audience

Ohanian is the primary owner of Los Angeles Golf Club in TGL, the league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. He pointed to format as a key factor in reaching a different audience.

“This format of TGL is so perfect for the online generation. Again, I say this as a Reddit guy. Take my word for it. It is perfectly built for the social media age,” he said.

For him, the shift is not just about how the sport is played, but how it is seen. Shorter formats, digital reach, and creator-driven coverage are changing who engages with golf and how they experience it.

He also pointed to what comes next. “I can't wait to see what happens with WTGL, and I obviously can't wait for the women.”

If visibility and format continue to evolve, the audience will follow, just as it has in other sports.

Imagine it: lights bouncing off virtual greens, hundreds of fans leaning forward in unison, and Woods, ever the picture of focus, stepping up to a hole that feels as electrified as any major championship. This isn’t just a comeback; it’s a masterclass in patience, grit, and showmanship. Debby Wong/ZUMA Press/Imago
Instead of sprawling outdoor courses, matches unfold in a stadium-style arena, where giant screens replicate fairways, bunkers, and greens with cinematic precision. Co-founded by Woods and Rory McIlroy, TGL layers strategy, tech, and primetime drama over golf’s classic elegance. Petter Arvidson/Imago
Back in 2022, Woods, McIlroy, and sports executive Mike McCarley started imagining a new way to showcase golf. They wanted fast-paced, visually engaging matches that would feel cinematic and pull in a younger audience. The goal wasn’t to replace traditional golf, but to create moments so charged that even casual viewers would feel the stakes. Scott Mitchell/ZUMA Press Wire/Imago
Six teams battled over fifteen matches, each more suspenseful than the last. Atlanta Drive GC emerged as the first SoFi Cup champions after a nail-biting showdown with New York Golf Club. The cameras captured it all: clenched jaws, visible sighs, and moments of pure triumph. Golf had never felt this urgent, emotional, or cinematic before. Kevin Dietsch/Imago
Season 2 begins December 28, 2025, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Fifteen regular-season matches will decide which four teams reach the playoffs, culminating in the best-of-three SoFi Cup Finals on March 23–24, 2026. Each team has four players, though only three compete per match. TGL
Woods will lead Jupiter Links Golf Club against New York Golf Club on January 13, 2026, in his first TGL appearance of the season; after months of rehab and countless practice hours, he is back on the lights, on simulated greens that feel just as real as the ones where he claimed major titles. But this isn’t just about shots or scores; it’s about witnessing a story of resilience, patience, and determination unfold before our eyes. Icon Sportswire/Imago
After rupturing his left Achilles tendon in March 2025, he underwent surgery and faced a painstaking rehabilitation. By September, he was hitting balls again, each shot carrying the weight of a career marked by injuries, back surgeries, and life-threatening crashes. The season’s marquee match is March 1, 2026, when Woods faces co-founder Rory McIlroy in TGL’s first-ever Sunday primetime showdown at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. Rivalry, respect, and shared vision collide in this matchup; for both the live audience and viewers at home, it blends decades of personal rivalry with a mission to reimagine golf for a new generation. TGL isn’t just about who hits the ball the farthest. Simulators mimic wind, slopes, and hazards, and the Hammer Rule lets teams double the value of a hole. The result: tension, bold calls, and nail-biting finishes. Spectators are close enough to catch a faint exhale before a critical swing, feeling the collective heartbeat of the crowd. It’s golf that rewards nerves, intellect, and flair in equal measure. Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports
For Woods, TGL is more than a league; it’s a chance to shape the way golf is experienced. Technology may define the arena, but human stories remain central: focus, legacy, and resilience. Fans witness a champion who has faced every imaginable challenge yet still steps up to compete. It’s a reminder of why the world watched Woods dominate the sport for decades, and why his comeback matters far beyond the scoreboard. Icon Sportswire/Imago
With Jupiter Links’ debut on January 13 and the Woods-McIlroy primetime clash on March 1, anticipation is at a fever pitch. Season 2 promises drama, strategy, and spectacle, and Tiger’s return ensures every shot carries story weight. For longtime fans, it’s a nostalgic thrill; for newcomers, it’s a glimpse at golf’s electrifying future, proving the game can shine under the lights as brilliantly as it ever did under the sun. K.C.
