Sergio Garcia Apologizes for Masters Outburst: "It Has No Place in Our Game"

Apr 15, 2026, 2:08 PM CUT

Sergio Garcia smashed his driver at Augusta National on Sunday at the Masters.

He received what has been reported as the first code-of-conduct warning in Masters history and shot 8-over to finish 52nd. Two days later, he went to X with an apology.

He snapped on the par-5 second hole during Sunday's final round, when his tee shot found the bunker. He took two swipes at the grass, then drove his driver into a cooler and broke it. Officials told him the club was gone for the rest of the round, but he still played 16 holes without it.

Tuesday night, he put it in writing. "I want to apologize for my actions on Sunday at the Masters tournament," Garcia wrote.

"I respect and value everything that The Masters and Augusta National Golf Club is to golf. I regret the way I acted, and it has no place in our game."

Geoff Yang, chairman of the competitions committee, walked over to Garcia on the fourth tee and handed him the warning.

Right after his round, Garcia addressed the outburst but stopped well short of an apology that day. "(I've been frustrated) through the year," he said. "Just obviously not super proud of it, but sometimes it happens."

It was the first time it had ever happened at the Masters. Garcia ended the week 52nd out of 54 players who made the cut.

He gave a calm and honest apology on Tuesday, but his results at Augusta since 2017 tell a much tougher story.

Sergio Garcia Went From Masters Champion to 52nd Place

He has no top-10 finish in 29 majors since winning the Masters in 2017, along with six missed cuts in eight Masters appearances.

His best finish in that run was a tie for 23rd in 2022. After his round on Sunday, reporters asked Garcia why things had gone so wrong at Augusta since that green jacket.

"Bad golf," he said.

Pushed further on what specifically went wrong, he didn't flinch. "Bad shots."

Garcia said the right things Tuesday, and what he does next with his clubs and his temper is what everyone will be watching.
