Shane Lowry Parted Ways With His Caddie Following the U.S. Open Heartbreak

Shane Lowry and his caddie Darren Reynolds discuss his tee shot on the seventh tee during the third round of the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches at PGA National Resort & Spa on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Shane Lowry walked off Shinnecock Hills having missed the cut. By the following week, his caddie was gone too.

The 39-year-old golfer confirmed on June 24 at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut that he is no longer working with caddie Darren Reynolds. The split came after he missed the cut at the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, according to Golfweek.

Lowry called on Dermot Byrne, who carried his bag for the first 10 years of his career, as a short-notice replacement for the week.

In his 10 years with Byrne Lowry, he famously won the 2009 Irish Open as an amateur and the 2012 Portugal Masters.

"We'll see what the plan is going forward. No idea really," Lowry said, as reported by Golfweek.

The caddie change came quickly after a week Lowry would rather forget. He missed the cut at Shinnecock Hills, where the fescue rough and notoriously tricky greens ended the weeks of several prominent players.

Viktor Hovland and Bryson DeChambeau also failed to make the weekend.

Lowry has made 10 of 14 cuts this season and finished tied for 44th at the PGA Championship.

He stopped working with Reynolds after the U.S. Open. He has also said that Byrne is only caddying for him this week while he decides on a long-term caddie plan.

Bo Martin was the caddie when Shane Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship. More recently, Martin worked with Min Woo Lee, but Lee has now switched caddies and is working with Shane Joel, according to Golfweek.

Lowry turned professional in 2009 and has three PGA Tour wins. His major championship record includes a tie for second at the 2016 U.S. Open, a tie for third at the 2022 Masters, and a tie for fourth at the 2021 PGA Championship.

He is not the only player reshuffling his support team heading into the Travelers Championship.

Several Other PGA Tour Players Also Made Caddie Changes Ahead of the Travelers Championship

John Ellis is caddying for Chris Gotterup this week. Ellis previously helped Wyndham Clark win the 2023 U.S. Open.

Ellis was available this week because the player he usually works with, Max Homa, did not qualify for the event.

At the same time, Chris Gotterup's regular caddie, Brady Stockton, is taking time off because he and his wife are expecting a baby.

Julien Trudeau, who used to work with Mackenzie Hughes, is now caddying for Sudarshan Yellamaraju. Yellamaraju has been one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 season, with several strong performances drawing attention.

Meanwhile, Travis McAlister has joined Tom Hoge as his caddie this week. McAlister has previously worked with Maverick McNealy and Gordon Sargent.

Steve "Pepsi" Hale, who was on Ryan Gerard's bag until the PGA Championship, has moved to the Korn Ferry Tour. Micah Fugitt, who carried Billy Horschel's bag until the Memorial, is now working for Chez Reavie at the KFT event in Springfield, Illinois, per Golfweek.
